some engine problems

i know this is a very general question but my car (1984 300SD) will run between the top 2 lines (temperature) i think it is between 80-120C*. so i am guessing around 100-110C*. is this normal? because it seems too close to the overheat line too me. should i bee looking into changing the coolant or anything?

also sometimes (1 out of 10 i would say) when i am taking off from a stand still i would floor the car all the way and it will take off very slow, and the engine speed would not go up. (it will stay around 1000 rpm) for quite a while. then after that it will take off just find. i checked all the vacuum lines and they are fine. does anybody have these similar problems?

Yea that does sound high. I believe my MBs run about 85-90*C on a hot summer day. Lately I almost never see it hit 80*C. It would probably be something larger than the fluid, maybe a thermostat could be a good place to start?!

Did you check your throttle linkage? When I bought the 83 the throttle linkage was so far out of its setting that the car reved like that.

120*C = 248*F 110*C = 230*F 100*C = 212*F 90*C = 194*F

at 50/50 most coolants boil ~258*F

Evan's coolant boils at 370F at atmospheric pressure.

i just been adding water to the car since i got it so i suppose i should go flush it and fill it up with proper coolant. also where is the thermostat located? easy to replace?

and about the throttle linkage, i pop the hood and played with the pedal and there is almost no play in it. it almost seems like the car is in a higher gear than it suppose to be.

and now it idles a lil low. a tick above 5. and if i am correct it should be between 5-10 (800rpm). i have ran a can of diesel purge and change everything when i got it 2 month ago too.

It leaks coolant? Use only MB coolant in it, normal coolant doesn't have the correct additives in it for anti-corrsion. I don't have a W126, just a couple W123s but they are in the front of the motor, on top pretty close to the upper radiator hose on mine. I haven't ever changed mine but it appears quite simple.

If it is in the wrong gear for the speed maybe you should adjust the bowden cable. What speed does it shift into 4th gear?

I believe there is an adjustment on the IP to change that, but again I don't have a W126 so.... W123 are supposed to idle at 750 +- 50.
