Mysterious puff of smoke

Only happened a few times.............that I've seen.

Usually going about 50-75mph. I'll happen to look in the rear view mirror and see a quick puff out the back end. Sometimes on acceleration, sometimes not. Engine doesn't miss a beat, shudder or anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Craig

Isn't it cool?

I have owned five 300D's over the last 25 years and they have all done what you describe though very infrequently. These engines have a very crude and rather ineffective oil separator in the valve cover – just a horizontal tube connected to the breather hose. This results in oil creeping through and coating the intake manifold. Eventually a few drops may collect at the lowest point near No 5 intake and get sucked in, usually at high rpm, putting out a quite alarming puff of smoke.

Nothing to worry about unless it is happening frequently as would be the case with faulty injector(s) – just another one of the joys of owning these cars!

If the engine would have made a shake or shudder I would be concerned. Glad to know it's OK. I don't remember seeing it on my other '85.

What's a puff of smoke if the engine lasts 500K miles? Plus, I'm addicted to the sound and the smell of the MB diesel engine. yummmmmm
