How to make the signal clicker louder
Now that I have my 300SD (W126, 1983) back, I keep noticing (or not noticing) how quiet the clicker for the directional indicator is, especially after the 560SEL.
Does anyone have a way of making this louder so that it can be heard over the turbodiesel engine? Thank you. |

Wish I knew.
My SL clicker is SOOO quite, And with the top down you can't see the turn signal light blinking. I can run down the road a couple of miles before I notice the turn signal is still on. Dave

Well, yes and no....I never could hear it even 15 years ago, and it can't be getting any better.
Given that the clicker is driven from an electrical device, would it not be possible to rout the output to one of the loudspeakers? |

I thought the 'click' was designed into the function of the relay. If so, try another turn signal relay.

I don't know if the turn signal relays are the same or not, but this is my experiance. A few months ago our turn signals stopped working. I replaced all the bulbs & still nothing. So I decided it must be the relay. The Dealer wanted $88 for it.

This relay is the same as the hazards relay underneath the wood console right? I thought it was only like $30, and I believe that is where the clicking sound comes from.

Yes, the relay that I'm talking about is the one under the shift consol, & yes that's where the sound comes from. Actually that's how I found it. After getting frustrated looking under the dash I decided to manually blink the turn signals & listen closely to see if I could determin where the sound came from. After positivly IDing it I called the local MBZ dealer. I gave them the part number on the side of the unit. He quoted me $88 & some change. I asked him what the other number was & he said it was the parts manufacter date. (early 81 I think) I asked him why so expencive & he explained that 20 years ago the relay was for the turn signals & the hazards. Today they use the same relay for more electrical systems in the cars & in more cars. Before I totaly gave up (refused) to buy a new one I called a junk yard. He had a few areound & said he wanted $25 each for them.

I have never really had much of a problem with my blinkers, but from time to time my hazards act up so sometimes I'll just let them run for a little while figuring it'll clean off any corrosion by allowing it to run like that. Still doesn't work flawlessly, but reasonably and in a short amount of time. Maybe I should take mine apart too, get the dielectric grease out.

I too would like to get it to click a bit louder. With the ashtray out, I can plainly hear it, but with the ashtray installed, I can barely hear it unless I'm at idle... |

Warden,
To take apart the relay I used some very very small flat head screw drivers. When you are looking at the end of the relay where the prongs are you should see that two sides have a little lip that keeps the prongs & the base from coming out. If you GENTLY pry the screw drivers under the lip the base will slid right out. Let me emphasise that the plastic cover might break very easy. I used the smallest screwdriver tip I have. Like the kind for eye glasses. If you look at it under a bright light you should see the tabs I'm talking about. Good luck. |

Gentlemen -
The 123 body has the clicker in the center console - I have always found it way louder than the 126, which sounds to be behind the instrument panel. My Q addresses a 126 chassis. |

Well really a person could install one of those annoying headlight on reminder buzzers to the right and one to the left blinker hot wire.
