Help me identify this leak and I'll be your best friend...

Well, after battling a rust hole that was causing a leak that resulted in water accumulating in the rear footwell behind the driver's seat, I now have a new water leak. The pic shows where the water is dripping. It's also accumulating in the same place on the other side. Can anyone tell me where this is coming from? Sunroof area? Rear windshield seal? Argh!!! I hate all these water leaks. It's been raining a lot here recently and I've been quite concerned. Thanks a million times over.

Alex

I have that leak in my car sometimes too . It could be coming from the rear window seal or the sunroof drain maybe???

Hey, new best buddy!

It's the rear window seal. As it shrinks over the years it pulls back in the lower corners and breaks the sealing ability. Yours is a classic example.

My trunk used to leak like this too. It cost me $85 total including the seal to have a glass shop put in another rear window seal.
My trunk is now dry as a bone.

Ok, so you're saying that it's a door seal, not the rear windshield? How hard is the door seal to replace? I'll look in to it immediately.

Wait, or is it the rear windshield seal Ohtooman?

Thanks

Alex

Well, I just took a look at the door seal. It's whole, no cracks, and the rear seat area, and the door area don't look like they have any water "damage" (no visible signs that water was there). This leaves me with only the windshield seal? Could the sunroof drains/seals cause this? Thanks! I want to get rid of all the leaks once and for all!!!

Sorry I wasn't clear. It IS the rear windshield seal! Since that glass(what is referred to as a rear windshield) only gets wind and bugs on it in a 240D , I called it a rear window mistakenly.

Classic REAR WINDSHIELD SEAL leak.

As you now know, it's the rear windshield. The search function has a lot of info about this; it's not a DIY job, they say. Enjoy your nice dry trunk!

Jabaj007, I was wondering why I had to spend just as much time scrubbing bugs off my rear glass , I can't get out of their way, needing to stay between the lines, but clearly they are going faster than I am ....

DieselHead, this is extreemly common in 123s, infact, this, added to the poor double walled rear fender design is why all 123s eventually rust behind the rear wheel wells. It's really too bad.

Oh crap!

My trunk has been dry as a bone since I have owned the car. I have parked and driven in heavy rain many times. Today, in a very light drizzle, I open the trunk to find exactly the leaks in the pic. Just a small puddle on each side but a puddle nonetheless. Looks like its time to attempt a rear window seal job. Have searched/read all the posts and I think I can handle it. Any input on doing one of these appreciated though. Thanks, RT

rear window seal leak

alex , i have to concurr it's prolly the rear window seal - i got the same seapage lately but i'm gonna see how things go when the ambient temps here get a little higher (which may be in july...) to see what happens cause my leak is barely noticeable although it is in the same spot as yours.
