Remove fan shroud ? how?

Hey,

I'm in the process of changing my alternator on my 1992 300D 2.5 turbo. I got the fan blade off the clutch by removing the 3 bolts. I was able to get the fan blade out of the engine compartment. However, the fan shroud still does not clear the fan clutch.

What's the trick to get the the shroud out? (Without taking the clutch off, if possible)

Also, anyone know how the belt tensioner works on this car? Do I have to stick a big allen wrench into the middle pulley to loosen the tension or is there a bolt somewhere else?

Thanks much for the help! Got the car in a few pieces right now!

I'm pretty sure our tensioners are identical. There is a plastic part attached to the head of the engine where the top of the tensioner spring and shock attaches. Loosen the nut and bolt that go thru this plastic part and also thru the head. Stick a long socket extension into the hole on top of this plastic part, pull back a bit to releive tension on the bolt and get the bolt out, then let it down.. the tension will then be off the belt.

You probably need to remove the fan clutch or remove the radiator to take it out. Taking the fan clutch off is easy.. take a 5MM allen key and stick it in the hole on the back of the water pump pulley, this will lock it in place. Then you can unscrew the allen bolt and remove the clutch.

These are the tools required for pulling the clutch on a 6-cyl diesel in a 124 or 126 chassis. They will help a lot for your 5-cyl also, although they may not be *required* since you have more room to work. But yes, the clutch & fan are designed to be removed together, not separately!
