My car is so lucky..

..I love it so much. Began the process today of replacing nearly $1000 in just parts. Here's a list but I may be forgetting a thing or two..

- Front calipers, brake lines and pads
- Rear brake pads
- Water pump
- Thermostatic fan clutch and fan
- Thermostat
- Belt tensioner
- Belt idler pulley
- Belt tensioner shock
- Serpentine belt
- Upper radiator hose

I'm getting it ready for a possible trip to Orlando, FL this June and a definate cross-country trip this summer. Still to-do are:

- Transmission shifter bushings
- Transmission mount
- Flex disc
- Tie rods and possible lower balljoints in the near future

I got everything apart today, put on the water pump then got stuck at the belt tensioner assy.. it has a 11 or 12mm hex bolt that I don't have an allen key or socket to.. so I spent several hours looking for one but no luck yet.. I will have to hit Sears tommorow morning. Here are a couple pics..

Calipers, pads and lines

MB Anti-freeze, water pump, rotella and brake fluid

The neighbors must be happy..

The rest of the parts

Engine shots

Filthy interior

Odometer shot

Turbodiesel,

I'm glad my MB doesn't need that many parts. I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory. Its hard for me to believe that that many parts need to be replaced.

I believe in that too.. I don't waste money on parts that dont need to be replaced!

- All brake pads are at 5 or 10%
- Front calipers are missing rubber seals and pistons are slightly scarred.. each occassionally pull during heavy braking recently
- Water pump wasn't leaking yet, but it's been in for over 100k miles.. don't trust it anymore.
- Fan clutch was no longer working well last summer, car would get too hot under certain conditions
- Tensioner bearing is shot, no longer moves freely, arm was cocked, belt wearing unsually and squeeling
- Tensioner pulley bearing shot
- Shock turned out to be OK but replacing it with the rest of the system
- Belt worn badly
- Upper radiator hose showing signs of age

I had no plans to change the water pump on my 603 until it was busted in an accident. They seem to last forever and do not fail every 70-150Kmi as on other cars.

Hope you have some good road trips this summer,

Didn't want to find out the hard way in the middle of the Nevada desert, md. IMO, it's money well spent.

Turbodiesel,
I hope you got all of those parts put away before the snow started.

Quite possibly true Turbodiesel. I'm a big fan of PM and replace everything that I think might fail as I drive in some tough country myself. At 250Kmi I replaced the vac pump, tensioner, fan clutch (earlier I had replaced the t-stat, upper and lower rad hoses, and a host of other things). After a two week "burn in" I drove out across SD, WY, MT, ID, UT, NE, ... Its just that I've heard the factory pumps will outlast virtually all the replacements (even dealer rebulids). I've also heard that Laso pumps are not as good as Graf. Which kind did you install?

Regards,

John,
If Sears does not have the tool, Grainger's on Hadley Road in S. Plainfield should.

Wow, Turbodiesel, what's impressive is that you're doing all that work in the streets! You're such a diehard, I can tell you're young because only young guys would work on the streets. Old guys need their garage or at least a driveway. Good luck.

That third picture will result in a big fat ticket in my neighborhood. I got a tow warning for leaving my previous SD on ramps overnight in my driveway!

I sure do not miss the days of working on the side of the street, or even in a driveway. A nice big garage is most usefull.
But good effort there!

What takes an 11mm allen? My set only goes to 10mm.
