Tool size for 240D's manual transmission FILLER PLUG.
Dear friends:
I've heard that a 14 mm Allen Hex is needed to remove DRAIN PLUG for 240D's manual transmission even though a different tool (and size?) is required to remove the same manual transmission's FILLER PLUG. Is that true? If so, what's the required tool for the FILLER PLUG? Thanks, Eric |

I don't recall it being different on mine. You might want to just crawl under the car and check. I use a 14mm allen wrench and a splitting wedge to hammer the allen wrench with (the wedge is normally used to spilt fire wood with). The wedge gives me enough mass to effect turning the plug. A mall or hammer needs too much room to swing. There isn't a lot of room to maneuver down there. I filled my transmission with a funnel and a clear plastic tube ran down from up above by the engine. I think someone posted that tip a while back and I adopted it.
You didn't ask, but I use Redline MT90 Manual Transmission Fluid Synthetic (1.4 qts ) in place of the recommended ATF. Jim Smith gave me that tip a while back and it has worked well. The car shifts slightly better and I believe in Redline's technology for manual transmissions over ATF. 1983 240D 4speed manual Last edited by JohnM; 04-15-2003 at 12:28 AM. |

They should all be 14mm.

14mm
These mythical 14mm allens are pretty hard to find, Grainger seems to be the only place in the LA area with one.

I went shopping around hardware stores (small ones have a better selection) and car parts stores. In the section that carries nuts and bolts some of them have a drawer for allen wrenches. I found two near me, one for $14 and another for $7.

I have the special differential/transmission wrench that came in the older MB tool kits. It has a 14mm hex "knob" on each end and one end is angeled. Its about 8 inches long, 5/8 inch wide, 1/4 inch thick and works well for the drain and fill plugs on manual trans and differential in MBs.
It says DOWIDAT one side and Mercedes Benz and PN 120 581 06 65 on the other side. Both ends are stamped 14 for 14mm. Maybe one of these is available thru a MB dealer. P E H |

I went to an industrial tool and hardware store and when they didn't have a 14mm, I bought a 9/16th long handle allen wrench and carefully ground down the six sides to fit.
