Make sure you get everything that is even remotely related. Don't forget things like the master cylinder reservoir with the nipple for the clutch system. Don't forget the console trim plate and shift boot to go with the COMPLETE shifter. Get the drive shaft because you may have to have a different length driveshaft made at the driveshaft shop, having an extra may be helpful.
Don't forget the flywheel etc. Don't forget the speedometer cable in case it is different length. I personally would not do this swap unless I had the whole car close by while putting everything together, so if you can ask them to keep the car around for a few weeks until you finish your swap that would be helpful in case you need something else. If you're a stick shift lover like me, this will be a worthwhile project. Oh yes, I almost forgot. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE PLATE BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. You will have to remove the flywheel from the engine before you can remove this adapter plate. Without you won't be able to correctly mount the trans to the engine. Good luck, |

Don't complain Larry, He is getting the parts very cheap and he does not have a 'parts car' storage problem after the fact...not everyone has the space you and I do....

Tell me some more. I didn't get the master cylinder reservoir because all of them have the nipple for the clutch master cyliner. What exactly is the engine adaptor plate? I didn't take the clutch and flywheel because I know the flywheel is different and I didn't have the sockets for unbolting it or holding the crank on the other end. Where is the adaptor plate exactly and what does it do?
How is the console cover different than the automatic? I thought about taking it but since it was a 240, it was just black plastic with no holes for the window switches so I thought it was not worth it. I didn't take the driveshaft but I did get the speedo cable.

The engine adapter plate is the item bolted Directly to the rear of the engine, which has holes in the correct place for the bell housing to whatever type transmission is supposed to be bolted to it...
I think you need the clutch and flywheel...and the driveshaft... not absolutely necessary but potentially VERY useful in time or money saved.... Get the right sockets.. then get a 1/2 drive HAND IMpact wrench... worth their weight in gold... you won't have to hold anything on the crank with that tool....They probably only cost $20 and you will use it the rest of your life.... |

I have a hand impact, I hadn't thought of using it. What is the name of the kind of head that is on the flywheel bolts? I've only seen them in the service manual and I don't know what kind of socket set I should be asking for.
Just in case that doesn't work, is the bolt on the front of the crank 27mm? That is what I seem to recall.

"I have a hand impact, I hadn't thought of using it" :
That is called " Museum Syndrome"... Having but not using..... I do not know what type heads they are... BUT strongly suggest when you find out that you get IMPACT sockets... no telling how strong those bolts are attached after 20 years.... Yes, the front bolt can be accessed with the $8 Sears Deep Socket.. and it can then be used on the injectors also.... But a regular 27 mm may work with a 3 inch extension.... |

Less hassle
Guys,
I've been out of town for a couple of days, so here's some news that may help. 1. Forget the engine adaptor plate, everyone that I've done has been the same for autos as for manual trannys. 2. All master cylinder resevoirs have the nipple for the manual transmission clutch master cylinder hose. All one needs to do is to cut off the tip and push the hose on. I'd recommend a small hose clamp even though a lot of them didn't have one. Diesel don, If you donj't buy the 5 speed, for heaven's sake let me know where it is. At $200.00 you can toss the rest of the car. And, yes, they bolt right up. It seems the Germans believed in commonallity of parts unlike some American car mfgers. And what is all this impact wrench thing? The only recalcitrant bolts I've ever found on a MBZ are the ones holding the lower front fenders in place. Good luck. BenI've
