I'm sorry to learn that your separator didn't work out, Alex. I recall you sending me a jpg of the thing early on. A soldered unit using copper pipe would probably hold up however.
The 240 separator will work just great. It will sit conveniently atop the existing drain line that goes down to the crankcase nipple.
I had posted a jpg showing my RU-1000 mounted on some aluminum angles in my '79 300TD somewhere on p.7 in the thread on Intercoolers. Here is that pic again FYI. My filter fit the turbo inlet perfectly BTW.
I also suggest you may want to support the front of the K&N using a short angle to the water pipe housing (let me know if a shot showing that is wanted) I found the K&N to droop over time (its body is pretty soft) and heat may soften it further.

I can attest to the improvement in acceleration after a K&N mod as felt by the seat of the pants method, and I also used a steep incline to measure whether I have to get a running start on a hill or not, and the mod improved the ability to get up to speed sufficiently that the car didn't downshift as it did with the stock filter cannister (non-CA car BTW) unless I failed to get a running start. ANd highway performance and ability to pass seems much better, again somewhat non-empirical but convincing enough that I was informed by a mechanic in FL that he had performed 90 some of these mods to date (2+ years ago).
My belief is that the U-shaped adapter in the stock filter arrangement reduces the turbo "efficiency" or ability to spool-up and increases air flow resistance substantially.
I would love to test a "before and after" car on a dyno, and said to Ridge that I would be willing to contribute t that effort, but nothing ever came of it.
