just picked up my third 300d, found an additional fuel cell in the trunk. anyone know howmany gallons it may be?

Just curious MBHACK. As everyone here seems of the opinion that a non turbo 300D is not worth buying and I've been unimpressed to say the least with the performance of the 3 I've test driven so far (including one Turbo) how do you like yours? If you have just picked up a third they must have something going for them right?

hi peter, i dont know how it drives, the motor was over heated and i picked it up from a dr. for $350 u.s dollars. but the body and interior are in good shape considering it is 22 years old. ide like to slam in a small block and have a demolition derby with a few other mb techs. lol

as far as my other cars i love the turbos. just fuel up and drive the piss out of it! after working on cars all day the last thing i want to do is be working on my own unless i really have too. lol
i had more things go bad on my 98 e320 then all of the other cars i own!

Is this fuel cell (tank) a plastic or metal one? I purchased a "white" plastic one years ago and had it fitted to the 220D/8. It was a 10/11 gallon tank and fit up against the back of the rear seat. It was a bit clunky as to how it was plumbed up, but once you were used to the switching hand valve, it functioned quite well. I usually only put about 8 gallons in it due to rear weight considerations, but that plus the main tank was good enough for a long days drive.

I recently acquired an '80 300D with an aluminum tank in it and it is rigged with a filler neck allowing concurrent filling of both tanks. Don't know volume of this one as have not driven it yet.

yes it is a aluminum fuel cell. no labels or names on it.
its not really that important i was just curious.

does this tank seem to have a few more lines into and out of it than normal? If so you may have a car that was once also run on WVO. The extra lines into and out of the tank would be to a heat exchanger inside that heated the WVO to bring the viscosity to a level that is used more effciently by the engine.

I must admit I can't see taking up trunk space for an extra tank as the factory tanks are large and fuel mileage very good,also seems an invite for alge and leaks. Should a person have to drive late nights in remote areas a good well made portable 5 gallon can kept full will take most MB diesels close to 140 miles.......then there's 1 800 Mercedes.......

My note above, especially addition of 2nd tank to 220D, related to the mid '70s after the fuel crunch of '73. Had a real interesting experience on a trip to Idaho back then to photograph the electrified portion of the Milwaukee Railroad. Had been carrying 4 five gallon cans in the 220D and it really came in handy on the way back. Never saw another open filling station after leaving Denver headed to NE Okla. Of course it was a Sunday.. last day before vacation ended. Eventually just got tired of messing with the 5-gal cans!! And as large as the trunk was in the 220D the little space lost was not missed.
