Wink

When I changed the guide rod joints on my 81 300SD, All I did was unbolt the mounts from the frame and unscrew the rods from the joint. No spring compressor or pulling device needed.

mechmagcn, You must have a worn lower control arm bushing with play in it,when I did my 81 SD I had to use a come along and put a lot of pull on it to get it to in...........

Bad Track Rod Mount Symptom?

Hi All,

Have read with great interest this thread on replacing the track rod mounts. Just yesterday I finished replacing the ball joints on my 88 560 sel. Everything went great - due in large part to all you. Everything came apart quite logicaly. I brought the steering knuckles (with old ball joints in) and the new ball joints to a local NAPA. The machine shop forum is a big fan of Mercedes engineering and therefore took a liking to helping me out. One day later and $25.00, the old were removed and the new in. I took the car for a test drive and it felt much better. Except...when I apply just a little bit of brake I get a "thumpthumpthump". If I apply full brake I get no "thump". In reverse I get no "thump" regardless of brake pressure. When I jacked the car up and looked around I saw the right track rod mount quite deteriorated. Do you think I'm right in thinking this mount is the cause of my concern? With my new, if somewhat misplace, confidence (successful ball joint replace) I will find this job to be no more complex?

Thanks again for your input!
