Are you using Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Delvac?

Just had to ask :-)

15W-50 is only available as Mobil-1

Delvac-1 is only available as 5W-40

Mobil-1 0W-40 is approved by MB, but all the xW-30 weights are not. This concludes your Mobil Synthetics 101 class for the day.

Ok, so you matched up the weights with an oil that is approved. But does that oil have the proper charateristics to control the soot, etc?

Which is more important, using an oil with the proper or sufficient wieght properties or using a diesel specific oil? Just figured I'd ask....

Both M-1 and D-1 are diesel rated (Cx) and approved by Mercedes for use in all their diesel engines. The Delvac-1 will probably suspend a little more soot safely compared to the Mobil-1, but for passenger car use, it's not a big deal. Personally I use Delvac-1 and change at 10-15kmi intervals, with oil analysis at each change to verify the interval is fine (on my engines it's conservative, I could go 25kmi or more).

BTW I meant that adiaw83 listed he used 15W-50, which has to be Mobil-1 as there is only one viscosity available for Delvac-1. Of the 5 weights sold of M-1 in North America only the 15W-50 and 0W-40 should be used in Mercedes diesels, and I don't recommend the 0W-40 unless you live in an Arctic area...

Regards,
