used 1980 300D Engine install
I have started the engine and there is grey/blue to white thick smoke. I have adjusted the ip several times. This is a used engine. Is this a bad engine or is there anything I have missed? Thanks James

If you just started the engine, it is common to have gobs of smoke as you describe. With handling an old used engine it gets tipped around and oil, fuel work their way into the combustion chambers.
Let is run until warm before making any conclusions. I have been there twice now with the same used install problem. That is not to say there is no problem, just hold on and see if it clears. That can take a while. |

300D engine install-grey/blue smoke
I drove the car around the block, and let it run for a good while. I also checked my ip-engine timing by taking the ip completely out again, and reinstalling it. It still smokes, the same or more. It cuts off when I stop. It takes a good while to start. Engine feels congested, with an exhaust kind of sound. Can loss of vacuum cause this. I did not measure any vacuum when I tested it. Still trying. Thanks James

Did you use the " start of drip" method for timing the IP ?

I previously used the ip timing drip method, but not this time, both times had smoke. Thanks for your reply. James

Have you pulled the injectors and looked at the precombustion chambers ? Maybe they need to be pulled and cleaned ?

And, if you pull the injectors to check the pre-chambers, get those injectors to a diesel shop to check for drip, spray pattern, breaking pressure etc. Some do this at no charge.
