w124 300td 79 vs 83-85(no turbo vs turbo)
Hello,
We have been looking hard to find a 300td. Saw one in the bay area listed for $12,900 that looks great but ouch!!! We recently saw a '79 for sale with a 124k miles and like new condition, compared to a turbo, are they unbearably slow?? Also I've been told that the trans. was better in the later years Last edited by ricci; 05-18-2003 at 12:42 PM. |

It depends on what the car is, a W123 n/a 300D can be slow, but faster than a 240D with an automatic. A W123 300D-t is much slower than a 1987 W124 300D-t.

Thank you for the response. I suppose I should be more specific.
We are looking at wagons only. Does that help, Vaj |

Ok, wagons, go with a 1981-1985 300TD-t, they are real dogs. I looked at a 1980 300TD, and that thing was slow compared to my 1979 300CD. If you can find a 1987 300TD in good shape, be expected to pay alot for it, but it might be worth the extra money...

There are a few 87 300td's out there
check out abracat.com, it's a collection of small local newspapers' classifieds from all over the country. I just picked up an 87 300td for $3,300 (needs Inj. Pump) with 170k and service records. Bought it sight unseen after talking with and getting comfortable the owner. I haven't checked in a couple weeks, but they pop-up every now and then. I searched for 8 months for this model and the wait was worth it. Also, it's a bit quicker than my old rabbit diesels.
