'87 300D-Turbo transmission problem

Hi,

I have a problem with the (automatic) transmission downshifting into 1st when coming to a stop when still cold (below 8 or 10 mph).

It is a very unpleasant jarring motion, as though there was something really heavy in the trunk crashing against the rear seats as I stop. Needless to say, I already checked for that.

This only happens while cold, and once it warms up to near-operating temperatures, stops are smooth. Recently I've been just shifting into neutral as I come to a stop, and then putting it in Drive again once I'm completely stopped.

Does anyone know what this is? And how much it would cost to get it fixed?

Thanks,
Hope
