617 block coolant drain?

Replacing the radiator and water pump for '84 300D and of course want to get all the old coolant out possible. The Haynes manual says to drain the engine block via the plug on the right side of the engine. Well, that's all they had to say about that. Can anybody tell me specifically where this block drain is so that I'm not needlessly disassembling the motor from underneath?
Thanx as always, Jeff

Look above the starter - kinda between the starter and the turbo. I don't remember if it takes a 17 or 19 mm socket. You can get to it with a socket and extension. You will need a new crush ring.

B300FO.

I am not certain on a 300D but on the W123 240D I learned the hard way (took two lessons too) to disconnect the battery when I do this. Too easy to have the wrench touch the starter electrical connections while it is also in contact with some other grounded part of the car (which is all around down there). Makes some serious sparks and can be dangerous. I was lucky both times and only made some sparks. Good luck, Jim

leathermang,

Rubber rings as jewelry? Tempting to try to uncover more about this practice but I will refrain. Jim
