A/C Woes Mounting

I was told by an indy MB mechanic that my a/c compressor is seized...and it's about to get real hot here in Tejas.

I found a source on Ebay that sells compressors:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33543&item=2416457120

...has anybody done business with these guys? Are they reputable? Not to be trusted? Carry the right compressors?

HELLLLPPP!

I know the ones on ebay are listed pretty cheap but I would stongly suggest spending the money to purchase a brand new one.

It is hard enough finding a good one Period... now you want one Closeby ?

I would say mail order from Carlisle... and take the stuff to Larry B's place... with a sad but cheerful look on your face.... like a puppy dog who has no where else to go..... see if that works....

Seriously...I will buy a new compressor, expansion valve and drier, if I can get Larry to help with the labor...or at least just supervise me!

I would be surprised if you need a new expansion valve. They are what is called the "H" design and are simple as all get out. I would replace compress/dryer, pull a vacuum, charge it and then see if you need to replace it EXCEPT if you experienced "black death" then you probably do need a new one. I would suggest too, flushing the system out and sticking with r12. Don't forget to add the required amount of mineral oil if you stick with r12.

Both my 240D and 300D will freeze you out these days running R12.

Yes, I am indeed putting things together to make some money on the side doing a/c work and other things. Our company is in the process of being bought, so this may end up being more than PART time work.

I got my Recover/Recycle machine and analyzed it for conversion to 134. Once convinced I could convert it to 134, I ordered the second one and it's on its way. It should be here next week. I have to go pick up new filters and such for them next week and should be set up with an R12 AND an R134 recover/recycle machine in a week or two. I'm now looking hard for an identifier because there is so much junk in the systems you can't take a chance on contaminating the recovered refrigerant and clogging up the machine with sealant.

I would be pleased to take on the job, but I am a VERY long drive from Fort Worth.

An automotive a/c shop in Dallas that I can highly recommend with no reservations is McCains on Floyd Circle near 635 and 75. They are honest, knowledgable, reasonably priced and just great people to do business with.

BTW, the compressor shown in the ebay ad looks like a Nippondenso. I'm quite sure your car has an R4. There are some good R4 rebuilders but you have to be very careful. I've been there, done that with rebuilt R4's. This is one compressor that I would highly recommend buying new. THEN I would also use a suction side filter to prevent the junk from destroying the new compressor.

Matt, if you will email me we can talk about what other alternatives there might be for my helping you. If you have a place to work and do most of the grunt work, I could bring my small vacuum pump and help you evacuate and charge.

Good luck,

For those of you thinking about visiting Larry because you are in the Metroplex.... LOL

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&address=&city=sumner&state=tx&zipcode=&homesubmit=Get+Map

The only way a person can accidentally be close to Larry's home is if you are taking a raft trip down the RED RIVER.....

Actually, Sumner is my post office. I live 12 miles from there near the Georgia community. I was surprised to see Georgia on leathermangs map. There is no store, gas statiion or anything at Georgia, only a Church, Cemetary and water tower. It's 20 miles from the nearest railroad track or four lane highway.

I live so far out in the boonies that my TV runs on propane.

Have a great day,

I actually looked at the map thinking I was going to be able to say " it is people accidentally in OKLA CITY that should stop by and see Larry".... LOL... but you are just a LONG way from any known town....

I don't know if you are kidding or not on the propane TV.....I have seen those catalogs for Missionaries... where they have so much stuff running on things like Diesel....like Refrigerators... ( absorption type )... so I am thinking... a thermocouple and propane.. .... you May be telling the truth....
