Ebay-Diesel Sound Shield

Some of you know from time to time there is a guy selling "diesel sound shields" on Ebay. I bid/won one on pure curiousity and the fact that I am too lazy to do what the TX crowd did with the quilted fiberglass from McMaster. The shield is suprisingly small and appears well made. I fits reasonably well but could be better. It does work very well at what it is supposed to do. Cabin engine noise is significantly reduced. It is still there but nicely muted and on the highway I notice the wind noise much more now. I should mention that my car badly needs a hoodpad so I don't know how much that factors into the engine noise I was hearing to begin with. Anyhoo, the little bugger just drops in place and sits on top of the back of the motor and wraps around forward to the injection pump. It stays where it is put and does its job well. Try to win one if you are so inclined. RT

Dear rwthomas1

How much did you get it at the final bid price?

Thanks.

I think it was $52? Not sure though. I was considering making my own but after pricing the materials it was easier to buy. RT

pics?

Can you pull up the auction and post the link or a link to the pic in the auction? I would like to see what your talking about.

Pic of it in your car would be nice if you’re so inclined.

My Unimog is so load I wear sound deadening earphones. But then again the engine is right by my kneecap and it’s a military designed rig so it isn’t ment to be like a quiet luxury rig.

I always wondered about these. I'm willing to pay up the nose to make my car a bit quieter. Does this thing get in the way of anything? accelerator linkage? If you say no, I'll get myself one. Thanks for posting about this!

I've thought about getting one of these before, so I figured who would be better to ask whether they thought it was worth it or not than a previous buyer?! So I emailed some guy who won a bid for it a month or two before and asked him the question. He replied that it did indeed make a difference, but for the money it wasn't worth it, and he wouldn't suggest buying it or buy another one. I may make one, but I really doubt I'll be buying this particular version. Did it look like there were very many cuts in it?

Thanks.

Sound Shield

I bought one off Ebay and installed a new hood pad at the same time. The noise did go down. So I would say if you have the extra money get one..

I went to a local chain store selling automobile stereos and found a website address for a company that sells soundboard. Eventually I'm hoping to soundboard every reasonably flat surface in the car. http://dynamat.com/

Yeah, thats the one I got thanks for posting coachgeo. The one in the pic is on a SD. It sits a little higher in the 300D and sorta leans in towards the motor. It doesn't get in the way of anything my my car. The accelerator linkage is close but doesn't interfere. I think you could make your own but I am not inclined to deal with sewing fiberglass material. I think its a good addition for $50 but I wouldn't spend any more. My car is fairly quiet and the new Michelins made a huge difference in that dept. If you have noisy tires to begin with you may not notice the engine noise reduction as much. I am planning on the Dynamat hoodliner kit next. I did a whole vehicle with Dynamat and saw a 4db drop at cruise speeds. RT

I get humming noises starting around 35mph, I'm wondering if it is going to get worse (rear bearings?!?). Your going to do dynomat under the factory pad, or just dynomat? My hood pad is also in horrible condition, but it is a low priority as I always have the windows open anyway so I can't even hear the motor. However most people are quite amused that it has 267k on it, so I suppose that would be good if it were quiet when I show it.

rwthomas- when you say you did a whole vehicle with Dynamat, do you mean also the doors and trunk lid, floors, etc? I was hoping that maybe if I did all of the above I could find a db reduction of more like 10 than 4....when it comes to listening to classical music the difference between the 190 and the 240- well, I would guesstimate it at about 10 db. Fortunately, the shorter wheelbase of the 190 keeps me wide awake. (Ye olde swinge shifte commuter.)

tscott,
I did a Mazda ExCab pickup with Dynamat. One layer on every interior surface except the roof. Tore the entire interior out and it took 3 days to do. 3db is a pretty good drop since db's are exponential not linear (i think) A 10db drop is unlikely in anything. A car stereo mag got a 6 db drop in a Jetta by covering every surface, including the trunk with two layers. What the Dynamat does best is kill subsonic frequencies so bass sounds way better afterwards. RT
