Gear shift selector is inoperable
Today, I was in the 300D, I pulled into a parking space and moved the gear shift selector to P. I noticed that the selector was very loose, and it did not shift to park, it just stayed in drive. I moved the selector back and forth repeatedly, with no shifting. So, I wasn't going to leave it running in the lot, so I had to shut it down and call a tow truck. So, now I'm home, and the car is here as well. I had new shifter bushings installed about 2-3 weeks ago, so that can't be the problem. I'm suspecting that it is the locknut that attaches the selector rod to the lower lever that's causing the problems, but I don't have a lift to get under the car to an inspection, so to the indy it is. What could be the cause if my guess diagnosis is wrong?

it sounds
to me like your shift rod fell off. the clips that hold them on are as i remember a little unusual and perhaps werent clipped on tight enough.

Does it feel like it is shifting or does it feel free and loose?
It would seem that the rod that connects to the trans popped out. If so the mechanic that put in the bushing should foot the tab for the troubles. Don

Oh yeah, I also forgot to ask, does the transmission being stuck in drive have any effect on the vacuum system? I read somewhere that the turbodiesel transmissions have some sort of vacuum control on them so they'll shift smmother. Since it's been stuck in drive, I have to lock the doors manually, and open the trunk with the key.

well
it sounds like you have no vacuum. there is vacuum to the shift modulator but i dont know that lack of vac can cause a shift lockup, but it seems like a remote possibility, but not the other way around i wouldnt think.

If you noticed the transmission shifting harder after the mechanic replaced the bushing, then he also disconnected the vacuum supply line to the modulator on the trans. That would cause a bleeding out of vacuum, hense no door locks. If so, find a new mechanic because between the shifter and a loose vacuum line....I would hate to think what damage he would cause in doing something like.........ummm adjusting valves.
