Take it easy on it until it reaches operating temp. I try not to let mine go over 2.5k until it gets up to operating temperature. When engines are cold, they have more friction due to the "shrinkage" (sp) of metal parts until they expand to their designed operating tolerances. Also, the oil pressure is very high until it is heated and thins out. Look at your oil pressure gauge when your engine is cold, it probably doesn't come down from being pegged until your engine is warm. I don't like to stress major ($$$) components unless , maybe it is an emergency situation.

I've never warmed up an engine more than the time it takes to run smoothly, and we have never, to my knowledge, damaged on doing so. We live in the country (so far, anyway), so no hard driving until Highway 41, about a mile and a half away. Start it up, run till it idles smooth, and drive off. Never drive very hard anyway, so it warms up fine at 35-40 mph and light throttle.
