cold start lever on w123 diesel

comparing my 83 300td with my 82 vw diesel vanagon, , the later has a cold start lever which I believe advances the injection pump timing so as to provide better combustion & I guess less smoke on cold starts. the merc has no such adjustment and I wonder why?

Different injection pump. The Bosch VE pump is a rotary distributor type with one plunger, the pumps on the MBs are in-lines with one plunger per cylinder.

For whatever reason, Bosch decided to provide the cold start lever on the VE pumps used on the Volvo/Audi/VW engines.
