96 E300D Fuel system

Question, on the above mentioned car is their an electric fuel supply pump on this car? If so, can it be activated to fill the fuel filter and prime the system after fuel filter cahnge. I did not get the filter full enough and it took quite a lot of starter spinning to get the system primed. If you have ever seen on of these you know that it is dificult at best to get to the fuel lines. Any insight, or should I just make sure the filter is overflowing before installation.

The fuel pump is mechanical, and the injection pump is self-priming. It will take a good 40 seconds of cranking to get her started, you can speed up this process by filling the large spin-on filter with diesel before installing it.

Thanks, I thought that was the case. I will have to make sure that I have enough diesel to fill the filter completely when servicing. Thanks again for your reply.

If you're also replacing the prefilter, make sure to order and install a new o-ring onto the prefilter, as it is not supplied with the prefilter.
It'll suck air into the system and eventually it won't run, the main filter will run dry.

Gilly is right, that happened to a friend in TN. As far as the filter goes, just fill it to the brim and carefully thread it on. You can fill it with diesel fuel or fuel additive like powerservice or biodiesel...

I fill mine to the top and the car starts right away.

On my 95 E300 diesel the prefilter is adjacent to and beside the main spin-on filter. There is a 10mm bolt that goes straight down into the top of the prefilter assembly. The whole assembly is tubular shaped and kind of "molded" as part of the housing for the spin-on filter, on the front right side of the housing for the spin-on filter, approx. the size of, what, a large thumb.

Yup, pushes into the top of the fuel filter housing, held down with a C shaped brackey, which is held down with a 10mm bolt.

Keith:
Just be sure you buy a new o-ring for the prefilter, the MB ones don't come with a new one the last I knew.

I actually have one I bought when I purchased the main filter. All I need now is the prefilter.

Someone sold you the rubber o-ring for the prefilter, but not the prefilter itself?
It does NOT come with the mainfilter, those small orings that come with the main filter are for something else. The oring for the prefilter is big enough to go around the average size thumb.

No, at fastlane the orings are offered on an individual basis. I just bought all of them to cover my behind. This was the first maintenance I have performed on this car and did not want to miss any orings, gaskets, and such. I even bought an extra oring for the oil filter which comes with it in the kit. I must have over looked the prefilter all together when ordering all the rest of the filters. I do not remeber seeing one listed, but I am sure they have it and I just overlooked it. I will order it and replace since I have the oring already .
