These are on the SD. Let me update all of you on the situation with this car - I now realize it has been awhile since I have made a post. Awhile back I lost an oil line and the original engine sized. I went to almost every junk yard in Denver in search of a fresh engine and found one with 90K that was in perfect condition. I put that in the car and while I had it all apart I rebuilt the transmission. As of late I have been working on industrial diesel engines and realized this Mercedes engine had much room for improvement. I changed the intake manifold with that of a 1980 MB (my first diesel) to get rid of the EGR system. I pulled an oil separator off an older 240 and put a cone filter on. Right now I am trying to get all the plumbing together to install an intercooler. I have "re-tuned" the inj. pump so it just gets the egt's to about 850 with 14 PSI boost. When I first started on the car with a fresh tune I could pull 80 maybe 85 up the "hill" to the Eisenhower tunnel. After what I have done so far I can max the car out (top gear speed). I took a trip to Nebraska this last week and if I shifted the tranny down into 1st I could burn some rubber from a standstill! (no neutral drops here) There is still much work to be done on the interior, gearbox, rear end ect. With the intercooler I should be able to get some more fuel in there without upping the egt's at all and I plan to get a 6 speed Richmond gearbox into her with some higher gears in the rear end. To the best of my knowledge I should be able to order the 6 speed with gears to my specs, and I plan to run the top 5 from about 2400 RPM to 4000 in their normal shift range. This will allow maximum power while running through the gears, thus creating a mighty quick car. Why you ask? Well I plan on taking this car with me to Germany and running with the best of them so I do need a bit more on the top end. I do think these cars take you over once you own one - but the day when I finish will be a good day. I am sure many of you will comment on this saying I should just buy a different car but hey - I love this one!! They really do have more potential than most people think. I'll let you know what happens with it all and photograph it as I go.

Please keep me posted on you engine upgrades and their effects good or bad. I have the same engine trying to push 10,500lb's around and uphill climbs are a bit slow for comfort...

I also do not have an EGR and my booste is way low 0.5bar

Which brings me to a question? When someone puts in an air valve boost controller in the rubber line to adjustboost, what do you remove in the wastgate mechanisim (if anything) to allow the air valve to take over the adjusting instead of the mechanically adjusted spring?

How bout sharing the information on the gearbox when you get it.
I'm running a 79-80 intake/exh too but have only run the boost up to 11. I will eventually get around to bumping it up a little more.

there will be plenty of pictures and information to come. For the wastegate question - if you are going with a aftermarket boost controller you only have to install it between the turbo and the wastegate - it just delays the wastegate activation until your prescribed setting. there are no parts to be removed so install is quite simple. I think you should be able to adjust the wastegate itself without buying the boost controler by removing the spring clip on the wastegate housing and carfully twisting the adjustment until the pressure is up to your liking. I will take a closer look at this later tonight and tell you for sure.

Here are the pictures of the boost controller on a airtech turbo. The top picture is with the cap on and the bottom is under the cap. I think the lock nut size on top is 13 or 14 MM and to increase pressure you twist the bottom nut (which is attached to the top of the diaphram, so the whole thing will spin as a unit) clockwise. thats the best guess from looking at it but i may be wrong.

Here are some pictures of the custom gauges I built. The two that are in the middle are EGT and BOOST. the thing in the middle is the 11.3 inch LCD pannel that will soon be mounted in the center console. The LCD will be linked to a onboard computer. If anybody is intrested in buying a set of these white faced gauges for the diesel contact me I will charge $20 a set. (they charge $140 or so for the SE, SEL versions which if there is a demand for I will sell for the same price, $20)

And please excuse the mess - right now this is still a construction zone.

"I have "re-tuned" the inj. pump so it just gets the egt's to about 850 with 14 PSI boost."

How did you go about "tuneing" the IP? Did you take it to a shop or did you do it yourself? Also, did that affect your fuel mileage at all?

Most of all, can it be done "in car" still on the engine?

I am very intersted and restless to do this. I would love to beable to even bark the tires at the light!

Breckman--
Where are you measuring you EGTs? I really like the guages you added and am scheming up something similar for my SD, but set in a Zebrano panel (since I have to do some console wood refinishing anyway). I used to live in Denver so I can really appreciate and am blown away by the difference you describe in your 'hillclimb' to Eisenhower! Did you go to three inch exhaust and, if so, where does the larger pipe start?

Still waiting for the IP adjustment details. Did you just tweak the ALDA or make an internal adjustment to the full-load screw?

Yes, I am still waiing on the IP info also. I'm going to remove the oil filter housing to replace the gasket, so I will have the access to the IP I need to do these adjustments. Please share with us, everyone is eager to know.
