Question What is it worth? 1987 300D

I am planning to sell my 1987 300D. I would appreciate any help to figure out what should be the asking price?

The car is in good condition with 248K miles. I drive 90 miles every day and get between 27 - 30 mpg. The drive is about 60% highway.

There is some rust around the rear wheels and behind the rear left light. The dashboard is cracked but it has a cover on it. Rear windows and the passenger seat control work sometimes (by pushing the buttons repeatedly). Paint is good except the top of the left fender, the front of the hood and around the head lights (chips due to highway driving).

Thanks

No more than $4500, less if the rear suspension need new links or the interior isn't in really good shape, the AC isn't working perfectly, etc.

The rust will reduce the value considerably, I'd think about repairing it if it isn't too expensive.

Inside of the car is in good shape except the dashboard is cracked and has a cover on it. I have records for all the work done for the last three years.

Joe:

There are five links in the rear suspenstion on each side:

the spring link that goes perpendicular to the centerline -- hold the spring and is on the bottom, as a pivot on each end, on for the subframe, the other for the wheel carrier. Nonadjustable.

The Camber link also is perpedicular to the centerline, on top of suspension, between subframe and wheel carrier. Inner end has an eccentric bolt to adjust wheel camber.

Tie rod. Also perpendicluar to vehicle cenerline, is at the center of the wheel carrier, controls toe-in and has an eccentric bolt on the inner side for adustment, tie rod end on the outer.

Thrust link runs from bottom of the wheel carrier to the subframe parallel to the centerline. Non-adjustble.

Torque link run from the upper middle of the wheel carrier diagonally toward the centerline, early versions have an eccentric bolt, later versions don't on the inner end.

When the rubber goes bad in the links, the wheel carrier will start to move in unwanted directions under load. This causes sensitivity to crosswinds, torque steer (car steers one direction on acceleration and the other on deceleration or braking), the feeling that the rear of the car isn't attached quite rigth (feels like the body is moving independent of the wheels) and miscelleneous noises -- thumps, groans, and rumbles.

Replacement links are from the W210 chassis and are more substantial, but require new bolts (12 point driver socket type, be prepared) and sleeve kits, but are much less likely to require replacement.

Bad rear subframe mounts will produce similar symptoms of less amplitude, but will also cause drumming on rough roads and distinct thumps going over speed bumps, etc.

Bad differential mounts cause "hard" shifts, with the noise and thump distinctly coming from the rear suspension.

PSfred,

Does an '87 300SDL have that type of rear 5 link suspension you are talking about?

I haven't been under mine yet to look. Actually I hope it doesn't. Just more to go wrong.

PEH:

No, the W126 has the semitrailing arms. Check them for rust -- Hans had a run on rusty control arms on W126s this year, he's replaced something like six so far.
