Leaking Diesel

The problem child is my 95 MB E300 Diesel w/ 103K miles (606 engine). I noticed a drip from around the spin-on filter housing. I've not recently changed either the (main) fuel filter or the pre-filter.

The leak just started yesterday. It wasn't leaking over the weekend because I was under the car changing the AT fluid and filter and I would have noticed, I'm sure. Last evening I smelled a little diesel while I was double checking the AT fluid level and noticed a slight weeping from around the fuel filter housing. I wiped around it and didn't get much on my rag at all. This morning it's "... drip, drip, drip."

I would guess a bad o-ring, but, as I say, I've not chamged out or touched either of the fuel filters in a while... say 12,000 miles. Would an 0-ring just start leaking?

Anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting in order of priority?

Thanks.....

Yes, that's not exactly a vibration free zone. Check the filter housing mounts, too.

The o-ring can crack with age, will then drip.

R Walter,

That's a common problem. Try tightening the filter bolt and if that does not work, install a new washed under the head of the filter bolt.

change it!

I say change the spin on and the inline filter..

they are cheap enough and the spin on comes with a brand new o-ring...

I dont care what ppl say but i change both of mine at every oilchange..
it costs me about 10 bux for the inline and spin on.. 10 bux is a lot better to swallow than a 1500 dollar pump the filter is protecting@

Looked at it some more and...

The problem is a slight leak from the shut-off valve. There are two very small vent-like openings in the stem onto which the shut-off valve turns. Diesel fuel is slight;y seeping out of one of the vent holes.

Twisting the fuel shut-off either way does not seem to be helping. Does anyone know if this whole shut-off valve stem thing is a replaceable part?

To P.E.Haiges:
The new washer under what you call the filter bolt and what I am referring to as the shut-off valve stem is a good idea. However, the fuel is leaking a little above that area as I describe above.

R Walter;

I seem to have come down with the same ailment. Little drip from the vent in the shut off valve. Did you come to a resolution?

Thanks
