Eastern USA MBZ Road Trip Roll Call

Stand-by motoring assistance requested.

As some of you guys may already know, next week, my son will be driving his 300TD from Austin, Texas to Coram, New York. I'd like to ask interested/willing forum members to "lend a hand" in the event that he runs into car trouble along the way.

We've certainly done 'due diligence' in getting his car as reliable as possible but, it is almost 20 years old and is a relative newcomer to our fleet so, you are never quite sure what may happen. That said, he'll be setting out armed with plenty of filters, as much of my newly acquired knowlege as I can stuff between his ears, an assortment of hand tools and a cell phone.

Right now, he's uncertain of which route (Interstate or back roads) he'll be taking. The ultimate route decision will be based on how much time he has left when he leaves Austin.

His preference would be the 'roads less traveled' since the three prior times he's been to the east coast (the last time was this August!), it's been an interstate push to be somewhere by a certain time.

I'll post his proposed route as soon as it's finalized.

Seth's a fine young man; friendly and thoughtful. Well traveled too: From Austin, Nome, Auckland and beyond.

Hopefully, this trip will be a breeze but, if something does happen, it's good to know there are fellow Benz-heads out there; thanks!

Thanks Dave!! The first leg probably will be up IH35.

"Seth" is his other name. There's a "Thing Two" also...she's in school down in San Antonio.

Hey-

Not sure which way he'll be coming, but I am in central VA, should he be on 81 or similar. Plenty of MB experience here-

I'm available here in S Indiana, off I 64, and I expect I could prevail on my brother in Clarksville, TN to lend a hand (no auto expertise, but road help) if needed.

Thanks All!!

He's off!

Heading for New York via backroads to Yorktown, VA and on to Coram, NY.

Actual route may vary but tenatively, TO is taking US79 to someplace in Arkansas then heading east on 64 to intercept the Blue Ridge Parkway until he's in Virginia? Then east over to Yorktown.

After picking up Natalie in Yorktown, it's off to New York and Long Island. Route undecided.

Sounds like fun to me...I'm green with envy.

BOGDAN...yes, he is going to Long Island. Please let me know who the mechanic is.

R Leo,

Sounds like a great trip. My wife and daughter made a similar trip together coming back from San Diego this summer. The wife flew out to drive back with her, and see her brother who lives in Texas. They also elected to drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoyed the trip very much. They got stuck in the infamous Blackout of 2003 as they approached NYC from Pennsylvania, and stayed in Allentown overnight to let the roads clear.

I sent you a Private Message with my phone numbers. I am a little North and East of the City, but more than happy to help if I am not on travel out of the area and Seth needs anything. I got an overwhelming response from the board when I asked for similar emergency assistance along my daughter's route out to San Diego and she was fortunate not to need anything. Best of luck, and based on my the experience of my wife and daughter, leave some extra time to take those back roads, and camp out along the way. My daughter spent one night on the road on the way out, and one on the way back in a motel. The rest were in National Parks or KOA places in tent. She and my wife loved it. Jim

Thanks all!

Your support sure makes this Dad feel a little better about sending offspring away in 20 year old vehicles (even if it's one of the better cars he's ever owned!).

I'll keep everyone posted on his progress.

Greg,
Thanks, but we've already used Trans-X on this car....seriously, he's a long way past Elgin by now; he hit the road about 8:30 - 9:00 last night.
