After market cruise control
The 240d I just fixed up and sold had cruise control and I really liked it. Haven't had cruise for years and would like it on my "85" Euro , 5 spd as shes our "road" car. Does anybody have any suggestions as to after market units. I assume that would be the route to go ??

I've seen units offered by JC Whitney but I doubt they are anywhere near as nice as the stock Bosch units. The after market system I saw involved using a small magnet on the driveshaft that tripped a senor to regulate a servo attached to the throttle cable.

Rostra makes the CC units for some of the OEM's. I have seen a few and they work very well. The cheaper DIY units work but not as well. The latest Rostra products use a servo like the factory MB unit but the guts are a superior digital design. I will be replacing the stock CC in my MB with a Rostra when I get around to it. Expect to pay about $220 for the unit. RT

I put a JC Whitney one on my 71 Travco. Magnetic sensor on the driveshaft. Every bit as good as the one in my MB as far as I am concerned. Cost was less than $100.

Thanks for all the input. I have all the components in a parts car, its just putting them all together unless the wiring harnesses are already there, it would be a bugger. The other thing, ..I have read some threads about folks (that are probably better mechanics than I) that have spend much $ and time trying to get their MB CCs to work right. Sooo I am leaning toward an after market unit. I think I could place the controller somehow that would not be TOO obnoxious. My MB mechanic/buddy said he has installed many after market units and will do it if I help. The JC Whitney one is either elec or vacuum servo, I assume the vacuum one would be the way to go as I already have plenty of vac.
RT ...I well check out the Rostra too.

I had the type with the sensor on the driveshaft on my 77 Airstream Argosy motorhome the first time I used it on I 75 on my way to Fla it ran away on me.Needless to say I diconected it.I never use the cruise on my MB's as it makes me feel like a spectator rather than the driver.........

The cruise on my TD has never worked since I bought it. The actuator was siezed and a magnet in the actuator motor had become dislodged. Since my water temp is so throttle sensitive, 7psi@3000rpm-85*c 10psi@3000rpm-105*c, I'm glad it's dead. It would quickly overheat if I set it and just watched the road.
