i bought them from www.gahh.com for $638 because everyone said they are the best. that includes seat bottomx2 seat backx2 armrest, headrestsx2. the piping was no additional charge. world upholstery sells the same ones for $580, but i went with gahh for the reputation of being perfect. what gahh doesn't tell you is that you have to cut the holes for the headrests and armrest and recliner. otherwise they are perfect.

For $638... plus the rest of the materials, I figure you have a practically new interior for around $700... when you consider the seats and dash are about the only issues that come up, that's not a bad price for what will look like a new car!
Looks awesome! GD |

here's a picture of the new pad vs old pad and the new cover vs the old cover.
the old cushion has a part number on it. so im sure it can be purchased through the dealer, ill try to figure out cheaper venues first.

don't worry, ill follow through with the saga. i have to order some seat bottom cushions through MB. so everything is on hold until they arrive. probably a week or so. i hate having the TD in disarray, but it is for a greater good.

Does ANYONE know why so many Palomino MB-tex and leather seats turn pink/purple around the side bolsters?

The Palomino carpet in the wagons also turns purple on the back wheelwells. Weird.

making progress
Performance products sent a bad spring sest with holes that don't line up. so that's delayed the finish of this project at least a week. and of course i have to pay for shipping and 'meet them halfway' which i think is hideous.
so all the seats are gone!!! except the 3rd seat of course which will stay. i cleaned the whole underside of the seats and the floor of the car with simple green and a green scrubbie and sand paper in some spots. then i coated it all with 303 protectant. i may even wax the floor if i get crazy enough! lol. strange looking no? notice the difference between the height of the new and old spring set. also notice the way the old one leans. you can also see the improvement they havemade by placing that X crossbar in the middle to prevent sway. what you can't see is how FIRM it is!!! for testing purposes i installed the driver's seat. it is not finalized but im about to go test drive to see if i want to thin my bolsters or add more lumbar. im off to drive!

I did this to both of our 84 300d and td. One thing that you might consider is buying a foam plug that fits into the front corner of each side of the bottom seat. The foam plug makes the seat corners much more firm, they don't sag or bottom out when you get in and out of the seat. I don't know if this is a dealer item but I bought the plugs (very cheap) at Oceanside Upholstery in San Diego. It makes a big difference.

UPDATE
The project is done, yes done. ALL done.
I haven't posted pictures yet because i want to clean the inside up a bit first. I also ran into a bit of a problem. I noticed (only when the seat was out) that there was rust in my passenger floor pan. Only just a little but enough for moisture to come in from below in rainy conditions. I did a lot of research on rust and how to fix it. Tried to figure out if I wanted a NEW pan or to patch it with sheet metal or a used pan. Ended up deciding the best way to do it was to cut out a used pan from a junked car and patch it, and apply seam sealer. So the seat has to come out again for that project to be completed. I also am waiting to figure out how I am going to install my heater switches into my wood console. Sorry for the delay and Ill get some pictures soon. The seats FEEEEEL GREAT!!! so FIRM. the heaters are a major comfort!!! and of course it looks hot.

Anyone have any experience rebuilding the seats on a Mercedes van? The seat in my 409d has a rip and I'd like to fix it. The fabric goes over a round tube at the base of the seat then there is a half round metal clip (about 20 of them) that goes over the fabric clamping it to the round tube. Anybody seen these before? How do they come off and on?

Would you plese post the factory number for springs, Foam or horse hair. Also the number for the heater and the source. I did see that you got the springs from Performance. But they usually will have a factory number as well as their own. With the number maybe I won't get wrong springs. Look's great. Sorry to hear about the rust, but at least you found it now instead of falling thru. Thank you. Charles |
