what brand calipers do i have? help!

i need to install new brake hoses. it seem like the hoses are pretty specific as to the 'brand' of the calipers in my 82 240d.

i can faintly see 'bendix' on the front calipers. the rear calipers have nothing written on them. the only thing that identifies them is the mercedes 'star'. i need to know how to identify the rear...how can i tell what it is (girling, bendix, ate?) help! thanks in advance

I couldn't say for sure but I would bet they are also Bendix in the rear. I think Bendix is the most common.

Actually, ATE is the most common in US 123's.

you'd probably have bendix at the rear if you have bendix caliper in front.. unless the PO replaced the rear with ATE calipers...

My '85 has factory original Bendix in the front and ATE in the rear. The ATE look like they are unmarked but if you look closely you can find a small ATE logo. My fronts are very clearly marked Bendix.

Seems funny that they would be different front and rear..... must be a $$ thing. I think mine must be ATE in the rear too, I assumed they were Bendix because of the fronts but they really aren't marked (and I've never looked that close at them) so that sounds like ATE from what Irg says.

Aren't the pad retainer "springs" different between the two brands? If that is the case, my ATE's have springs made from folded flat spring steel and are formed into a cross shaped form. Pulling the wheel on one should allow you to verify if this is indeed an ATE or Bendix application.

FWIW, my Bendix calipers (I have Bendix on all 4 corners) have wire springs. In fact, I still need to replace one of them...
