Question Diesel Purge - How Often?

If you include this as a part of your regular maintenance, how often would you perform this procedure per year?

So far I have only used diesel purge as a convenient way to fill up new "spin-on" fuel filters at the time of change. Someone has correctly pointed out that this causes a dilution of the beneficial effect because plain diesel fuel quickly gets mixed in.

On the other hand, I am running a lot of interstate highway miles on a daily basis, and regularly use Power Service and Red Line DFC additives. Hopefully this reduces the need to run diesel purge.

Just one person's opinion & experience.

You know i ran a can of DP through my car this weekend (the "pure" method as stated above) and was surprised to read "product contains 65% diesel fuel" on the can. What's up with that?

That's true but I guess it's the other 35% that makes the difference.

I've had good results after and every time I perform a DP on Smokeless I and II (both 84 300DT) -- easy morning first-start; smoother and peppier running engine. However, I have not come accross a thread in this Forum suggesting an OVERDOSE may cause problems. My plan is to perform a DP every time I do an Oil Change (every 5,000 km.) or about 4 times per year. What say you all?

PEH, What kind of model do you drive? DP is not an additive but a cleaner for injectors. It does what a fuel filter do to diesel, IMO.

83W123DT,

I drive a 300SD and 300SDL now. I have had 180D,190D,200D 220D and 240D in the past. I have logged about 1/2 million miles on MB Diesels.

Anything you pour into the fuel tank other than Diesel fuel, I consider an additive. I do use alcohol (Drygas) once in a while to remove moisture.

I wouldn't say that DP is the same as a fuel filter. A filter blocks dirt from getting into the injection system whereas DP is a cleaner than is supposed to remove contaminates from the injectors.
