Price for diesel compression tester
Hello!
Does anyone have any suggestions on where a decent quality but relatively inexpensive compression tester can be had? This has been one major tool that I've always lacked, and now that a friend of mine's looking at a 240D with pretty high miles, I'm starting to think that now may be the time to get one (haven't seen the car, but it sounds mechanically sound; the test is primarily to pacify his mom ). Ideally, I'm hoping that the tester can be used with (i.e. has adaptors that can work with) the OM616/617, the 6.9l and 7.3l IDI Navistar diesels, the 5.9l 6BTA Cummins engine, and the 6-71 Detroit 2 stroke, although for the "right" price, I'll be happy with something that'll work with the 616/617 alone. Another thought; does anyone know of a shop, parts store, etc that might rent one for this purpose (if it turns out I can't afford it soon)? Thanks in advance! |

What is the difference between a regular engine compression tester and a "diesel" one?
I have a compression tester that I use for all my gassers... I didn't know there was a difference, aside from the nipple on the end maybe? In which cas won't I just need to make a fitting? |

Diesel engine has whole lot higher presure. Also, diesel tester usually has a quick connect at end of hose and then you have different adaprters to fit into different engines. I have one with adapters for VW injectors, glow plugs and MB injectors I think. Not like the hose with couple of different threads on the end like my gas tester.

Phil sells one on PartsShop. Here's the info on it: Item number: M70TE $67.50. It comes with either an injector adapter or glow plug adapter. I just got it & it seems pretty good.

Comp. Tester:
Reg. compression tester goes to 300lb. Deisel go to 500lb. If you use a regular on a deisel you will explode the gauge. just too much pressure. Plus you need the special adapters for deisel. Some rental yards have them. But alot of these are beat to heck. I beleive I paid $75 or $100 with all the adapters.

A few months ago, someone on this site provided a link to a man selling K-D brand testers for about $30. I bought one and it came with several adapters.
If you cannot find that posting, let me know and I will try to find my paperwork and get the email address. |
