Did you prop the needles off the pins (I think both the speedo and oil gauge rest on pins at zero) or were you able to paint around them?

I left them on. I removed the gauges from the cluster, then slid a piece of paper under them. I also took a q-tip and a little Simple Green to the odo. Cleaned the bulbs and put it back together.

Thumbs up Nice work.

Perhaps this is a borderline stupid question, but how can you clean the whole odometer off? Can you access the other numbers? I've never taken the gauges out before so I have no clue, but it seems pointless just to clean off what is showing there. Can the odometer itself be taken out, cleaned, and reinstalled without changing the mileage or creating a future problem? I remember all to well how fragile the speedometer needle is....

I was able to change the trip odo and clean all the numbers, but the mileage odo is tougher. I was able to get around to probably 1/3 of the numbers, so now I'll clean the rest as it goes around. The clear plastic is broken on my cluster, so I can remove it. On my list next time I'm at the junk yard, $25. A small price to pay for clean numbers and bright needles.

So you just took the trip odometer out to clean it? That is the one that bothers me most, my main odometer isn't nearly as bad.

I left it in. If you push slightly on the reset arm of the trip odo, the numbers will spin freely. Let it go and they lock in place. I unlocked and moved the numbers with the q-tip then moved to the next. Clean from the bottom. I should have taken more pics. I need to take it apart again this weekend for the new cluster, I'll take some.

One last question before this thread falls into the archives, could you tell me how the color works on the hi beam indicator? It makes no sense to me but my blue is on the top third only, but the hi beam indicator looks just right and is centered. My cluster face isn't broken on this one (it was on the 84) so I can't tell what I should or can do. I thought it was all on one piece but maybe I'm wrong. Thanks.

If you're saying what I think you're saying....if you look at the picture I took you'll see that the glow plugs, seat belt, high beam, etc., are screened onto pieces of a plastic film that slide into a slot on the side of the cluster.

It's there on the cluster on the left, and stuck to the clear plastic cover (missing)for the right. They can be changed with a pair of tweezers, if they're not stuck in there. On my cluster, I think it had broken before and the PO tried to glue it together, and got glue on the plastic film.

There's even a center section that's glued on, must be for? Maybe gear indicators when shifting on the tree? If there ever was a column shift on a W123. I've wondered if I could put an outside temp indicator in there like the W124.

Is that what you wanted to know?
