Tell me what ya think
Hello,
I just came from an auto salvage yard where I found a 1980 300D. The winshield is missing and so are some of the windows but otherwise the car is "in tact". The car has a bad tranny according to some writing on the car but the engine is supposed to be good. The odometer is showing 131,000 miles. Anyway, I need to know two things. First, will the radiator from a w123 300D work okay in a w123 240D? Second, I need some pointers on getting it started since it has been in the "junk yard" for the last five years. I figure for $100 bucks I couldn't really go wrong. Oilslick |

I would drain and refill the oil for sure. You never know what has crawled down the dipstick tube after five years!

Hi Oilslick.
The radiator should fit fine. Drop the fueltank and check for algea, take some clean fuel and fuelfilters. Louis. |

No , you can't go wrong.. if you can't get it running I will show you a site which shows how to make an inline engine into a Power Hammer for Blacksmithing... .
Be sure to read Larry Bible's story on how he overreved his rebuilt daughter's car engine... a car in the ' yard' might have something off it which you would want to put back on or into shape before ATTEMPTING to start it... would not want to trash a low mileage engine due to lack of reading... |

Hmmm a 1980 eh?
I might be interested in a couple of parts if it still has them onboard...
Let me know if you'd like to discuss getting some of your huge investment back. PM me. I have also dealt with the starting of 2 mbz diesels that have sat for extended periods and the fist thing that I do that always helps a great deal is to shoot four or five shots of atf or engine oil into the cylinders. Let it sit overnight then rotate the engine by hand a few times over. Shoot some more atf into the cylinders and then let it sit for a few hours then try starting. The cylinder walls go dry and a used motor has a hard time building compression without some oil on the rings. This has worked for me very, very well in starting a hard to start or engine that has sat for a long time.
