Angry My new 86 300SDL is not shifting

I just bought a 1986 300SDL with 207K for $2000. The car was bought on the auction by dealer. When I bought it from the dealer I checed the engine only because the car was not driveble (bent tie rods). I towed it to my mechanic, changed the tie rods and front tires. On a test drive car was not changing gears at all. Everything looks all right. What should I check first? I read about B2 piston failure. Thanks for any help.

Are all the vacuum connections to the transmission intact? Also, check the fluid level.

Check the kickdown switch under the throttle pedal, if stuck down it will stay in 1st gear.

Update

I changed the transmission fluid and filter. Took for a test drive and is switching to all the gears but at 4600RPM.

WOW- 4600 is way to high of RPMs. That will destroy the engine in no time. I would not drive it until it was repaired. Did you check that kickdown switch?

check the pressure control cable (Bowden cable) attachment at the trans (small lever set up at passenger side of trans) and up at the control linkage. Sounds like it's disconnected or jammed up.

An OM603 in good tune doesn't mind sitting on the IP governor, mine's 4800-4900 rpm but I've seen 5100 rpm. That's the recommended way to clear curd and soot from the fuel and intake system.

Shifting at that rpm is probably bad for the transmission, though.

Thanks for all for input on my problem. The problem was a stuck kickdown switch. I pull it out and the is car shifting perfectly. This forum is the best. Thanks.
