'84 300D, just coming up to 400,000 miles on original engine. Original trans rebuilt at 391,000. Just getting broken in ... !

How many miles on your Mercedes

My 84 300D has 436,000 on the original engine and original auto trans. Granted the front and rear seals on the trans leak. Engine has never been opened up other than valve adjustments and one timing chain. Regular oil changes. No IP work. Its the MB Puke Yellow color with palamino interior. Had it detailed last July and the pin strips redone. Its my daily driver and I take clients in it all the time. Both half shafts have been replaced. Front end rebuilt. On my second set of Bilsteins (comforts). Have had serveral minor accidents in it including a suicide deer. Its a Southern CA car, so it has no rust. Biggest gripe: I have to replace the oil cooler lines again (bought the cheap CRP ones) and its not the easiest on brakes. Thank goodness the parts are cheap. I bought the car with 81,000 on it in 1988.

1979 240d, manual trans.

203000 miles

Just aquired(well almost), still waiting on the contractors to finish the garage so I can get to work on it. IT IS KILLING ME!

Have picked up a boat load of parts to replace, ARRRGGG, I WANT TO GET DIRTY!

Mileage

Have an 81 300SD with just over 400,000 on it.

Was running great at full throttle in third gear chasing a Porsche 930 Turbo around a lake rode when a new Bosch glow plug tip exploded due to a bubble in the casting. Broke a ring in #5 cylinder and scored the wall. I rebuilt the engine at 182,000 and put soft parts in the trans at the same time.

This car has been on numerous race tracks around the country. Most races were with Mercedes-Benz Club of America. Won the Portland (OR) International road course and autocross against all (about 40) diesel M-B's. Got fourth in the 1/4 mile drag race. Hard to out run newer cars with less weight and more horsepower. I have never driven any car as hard as this one and it has been the best car I have ever owned. Ran it full throttle across Montana for over 100 miles on a sunny afternoon. What a thrill it has been.

It has been in 43 states, Canada twice and to Mexico. From Key West, FL to Maine to San Diego, CA to Van Couver, BC. Had Superlamb build their best seat covers for all the seats. Leather looks like new. I have never wrecked the car but had the sides repainted to cover up door dings and scratches.

Also have an 83 300SD with 221,000 miles on original engine and transmission. Runs strong. Bought the car for $1300 because the vacuum pump needed rebuilding and the car was dirty and neglected. Cleaned up fairly well. I laugh about the price.

Wish M-B still made cars like these 78 - 85 turbo diesels.

Diesel on!!!!!!!!

DslBnz 11-27-2003 12:00 PM

Woa-ho. Wait... What has been done to your SD to make it so fast? I know with 120 hp and 3600 - 3800 lbs unloaded weight is not really substantial for coming in place for drag-races and such.

I own a very quick diesel, too. I just am curious as to what you may have done to it?

Chasing a Porche turbo??? Again; WHAT DID YOU DO TO THAT DIESEL TO MAKE IT RUN LIKE THAT??

1mercedesman 11-27-2003 12:30 PM

How to make a fast M-B diesel

When I rebuilt the engine, each cylinder was bored two repair sizes larger, every friction piece was polished and treated with Lubri-TEX friction reducer, rebuilt the turbocharger and increased the boost to maximum before the overload system kicked out the fuel delivery, turned the fuel delivery up to a maximum reasonable amount, increased high idle to 4800 RPM, usually run a K & N air filter but remove it for racing, fill the tank with best diesel available in the area, add Lubri-TEX diesel fuel conditioner at an excessive volume, add Lubri-TEX friction reducer to the fresh Mobil 1 synthetic oil, Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid, Mobil 1 synthetic differential lube with Lubri-TEX friction reducer, run on 15" BF Goodrich Comp TA R1 racing tires, use Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks, always race on fresh brake pads / fluid, fresh fuel filters (3), fresh coolant, and a fresh valve adjustment.

Then you must have racing knowledge, skills, and the guts to run your car to it's limits. Most people think we are crazy to drive our luxury cars across country to race them and expect them to make it home afterwards. I have done it year after year with success.

DslBnz 11-27-2003 02:02 PM

Do you know how much RWHP and torque is she putting out? Wow, sounds awesome.

Inter911 11-27-2003 03:50 PM

83 SD has 400,000 kms I guess that's about 255,000 mi. Most of that here in northern Canada where temps can get to minus 50 C. On my third transmission but original engine with no repairs yet.

Replace shocks every year or two, battery every 2 or 3, rear wheel bearings every 3 or 4, front rotors every 4 or 5, ball joints/tie rods every 5 or 6 ..... gave up on turn signal switch (breaks whenever it gets to minus 40 or so) and central locking (rubber diaphrams crack in cold). Still for an average cost of about $300-$500 in repairs per year over the past 15 years you can't beat it.

Ol' Silver, an '84 Euro 240D manual is at 533,000 miles but no longer counting. If I can ever get my employment situation worked out I hope to put her back on the road and at least take it to 1,000,000 kilometers (633,000 miles.

Happy Thanksgiving,

RWHP & Torque ? Response

DslBnz,

No idea on rear wheel horse power or torque. Has never been on a dyno. Wish I knew. If I find out, will let you know.

Ditto here. My SDL, according to mercedes500.de weighs 1810kg unloaded(not curb)and does 0-100km/h in 15.2 secs can go 195km/h(119mph)with 145hp and 195 lb/ft of torque. Of course that's with the trap oxidizer in place.

My SDL does that in about 8 second range. She puts out up to 16 psi depending on how much pedal I give it, and gets on average 28mpg. I taped my car using a digital video camera doing this, so I could prove it. Many people on benzworld.org thought I was a nut for making such claims; until I got the DV camcorder!;)

My movie is being sponsored by 500sec.com. The webmaster, Peter I believe, will put up anything a Mercedes enthusiast might enjoy that you submit.

Did you see my avatar? Well, that's all oil-burning frenzy at 139mph.

turbodiesel 11-27-2003 10:42 PM

300SDL or 350SD at 139mph?

DslBnz 11-27-2003 11:57 PM

300SDL.

Not the 350. The 350 can't make it past 115 mph. The redline limiter will not permit it to go further.:(

The 350 has a deeper note when winding up then a 300 does. It sounds better. The 300 sounds just like the E300 turbodiesel. In fact it sounds EXACTLY like it. Same engine, different head I guess.

The 350 is very quiet at normal highway speeds(70 - 80mph) when my 300 is not. Once you get past 90 - 95mph it quiets down.;)

Tom Sweeney 11-28-2003 01:44 PM

My '82 SD has 304,000 on it, engine and transmission were rebuilt at 200,000, '86 SDL has 260,000 original engine and transmission.

Tom

turbodiesel 11-28-2003 08:00 PM

That's amazing. Must have taken 10 miles to get to that speed.

DslBnz 11-28-2003 08:41 PM

turbodiesel, next time I will make a video of that little "stunt". Then you can judge for yourself!:)

It really didn't seem to take that long at all. At around 5K, it starts to slow down a bit. The fuel gets cut back along with the boost courtesy of the overspeed governor.

I know this isn't my car, as mine has the 12-valve head, but here is the torque curve of an E300 turbodiesel(other than the 24-valve head and intercooler, virtually the same setup). Pulls like heck up until 4800 rpm.;)

http://www.ejzcars.com/kfmercedes-300td.gif

For a little comparison, here's a 270CDI chart,

http://www.ejzcars.com/kfmercedes-27...56ps-330nm.gif

If you notice, the torque curve for the OM606 is flat almost to redline. Pretty impressive. It hauls butt up to its top speed. My car does this too, hills ain't a problem.:p

I know its hard to swallow, and you may be skeptical if you wish. At least until I get that video posted.
;)

turbodiesel 11-29-2003 02:36 PM

Fastest I had mine was 115.. seems to take a while after 100. It felt like it had more but didn't want to risk jailtime being it would have taken a long time to get to top speed. I'll tell you, that car is solid as a rock at any speed.

GTStinger 11-30-2003 10:23 AM

1983 300SD daily driver that my father-in-law put many miles on.

Now at 433,000 and climbing.

Rebuild engine at 385,000
Swapped transmission at 415,000

dkoch255 05-25-2004 08:08 PM

230,000 and runs like a charm.

Veloce300DT 05-25-2004 08:40 PM

My Orient red 84 300DT in storage has 524K miles!!!!!

Original Engine
Original Transmission.

I inherited the car from a family friend, and for the past 5 years has been used as an in town car for errands and such. The engine has been religiously well kept, but all of the other things on it are gone- No A/C, Heat, drivers window is the only one that works, power door locks gone, etc etc etc.. It runs well but burns oil. Its basically has en engine, brakes, stereo and a three pointed star on the hood. Body is in great shape. Interior sun damaged.

A fun junker car. Saving it for body parts. Maybe restoration far down the road.

But can you believe 524K miles on the ORIGINAL ENGINE and TRANNY!?!?!

Sooty Taillight 05-25-2004 09:45 PM

Such a responce, I doubt anybody will dig this deep to see this reply response but I have 226,000.00 on my 87 300D, 170K on the engine.

The '80 manual 300D has 244k on the clock , but I think it was disconnected for a long time by the PO .
The 82 Auto 300D has 350k and is very strong ,

ktlimq 05-26-2004 07:50 AM

invisik,

Sorry for bringing oil topic, but could you tell us a little about your 0W-40?

When did you switch to 0W-40?

Someone on this forum with older MB diesel who switched to 0W-40 reported that his engine ran noisier. He switched again to Mobil 5W-50, and the engine became quieter. He was talking about noise before warm up.

I switched to synthetic, but it is 20W-50 Amsoil.

Grdenko 05-26-2004 10:13 AM

1991 300D - 185,000 miles no rebuilds

i switched to Mobil 1 0W-40 earlier this spring and i was burning oil at startup when the engine was cold. its not so bad anymore now that the weather is heating up, but i wouldnt recommend 0W oil unless you live in the arctic circle. im switching to delvac 1 5w next time i change it.

83MB300TD 05-26-2004 01:59 PM

LulaBelle is a 1983 300TD and runs quite well for her age. We wrecked in '86 (bad one, struts and guts replaced by German mechanics as they came to the US) and the spedometer hasn't really worked since but I figure she has about 150,000+ miles which isn't much on this age vehicle.

This may not be the right forum for this but...

A year ago I took the car in for an oil/filter change and a synthetic was used and the car has been leaking oil since, even after a few more oil/filter changes. I've always used Quaker State 10W30 in the winter and 10W40 in the summer before and after this mishap.

The problem now is it smells like diesel and oil mixing, and looks like major leaking around the injectors (I think). It looks like everything is soaking wet with oil/diesel. I'd take the car to the dealership but I have qualms about that now as the total price usually triples and quadruples from the estimate and I just don't have that kind of money.

84300DT 05-26-2004 02:13 PM

maybe your injector return lines are leaking/old and need to be replaced.
just take a good looksee at them.

83MB300TD 05-26-2004 03:43 PM

84300DT - I think this is exactly what's wrong. Installing new lines shouldn't be too expensive should it? Is this something that a trained mechanic should do or could I?

Thank you for replying!

ps: my car has the original trans and engine! She purrs on the highway...

Ohtooman 05-26-2004 04:24 PM

83MB300TD,

Injector return lines are really easy to do. Just buy a meter or so from MB dealership, get a pair of needle nose pliers and a sharp razor or knife and ease them off, being careful not to nick your injector nipple. It only took 30 minutes or so to fix. I lubricated mine with a little engine oil to get them on easier; pretty hard to do otherwise.

83MB300TD 05-26-2004 04:32 PM

Thanks, Dave! I appreciate you sharing with me. If I can't get to it I'll ask my brother to help.

Ohtooman 05-26-2004 05:21 PM

Should help your fuel mileage and reduce the risk of fire. Mine was so bad I was getting 18mpg instead of 26-27 as usual.

just do exactly what ohtooman just said above, and you should be good to go.
it is definitely a project that you can do yourself. just make sure to save the metal plug in the line at the very last injector to use again with the new line.

125,800 miles on SDL. Original everything, except broken Becker radio and Bosch euros. Purchased 2/2000 from father-in-law; had 65k miles at the time. The vehicle is showroom and is my daily driver.

CannonBall 05-26-2004 06:31 PM

odometer stopped at 302k, the previous owner said that was about 6 years ago. Bought the car for $300 in january.

'82 240D, 2nd owner. 382,000 miles; purchased @ 300,000 13 years ago, CA car. 6,000 miles on reman MB engine installed last year; 182,000 on second transmission. Recently had original Becker radio replaced with Eclipse radio/CD. Auto trans., 26 mpg w/ egr valve blocked. Had a/c compressor, etc. removed when new engine installed. Very basic car & love it. Accelerates effortlessly on freeway ramp and cruises comfortably @ 70-75. Don't know what its top speed is.

VeeDubTDI 05-26-2004 11:28 PM

279,100 and still running well.
