How many miles on your Mercedes diesel?

This topic may have been here before, but I guess this could be a update.

How many miles do you have on your Mercedes diesel? Does your car still have the original non-rebuilt engine and/or transmission?

The two 1984 Mercedes I am considering has 292K and the other has 330K.

rickg 11-20-2003 02:16 PM

I think we did do this awhile ago. But what the heck! Let's do it again:D
Mine is on it's second engine. PO replaced it at right about 300k. Don't know why tho'.
And I'm pretty certain the trannie has been replaced/rebuilt too. It's VERY clean on the outside, shifts very well, and has no leaks.

TX76513 11-20-2003 02:23 PM

My SDL has 223xxx miles on the original engine. Transmission was replaced my PO at 166K. No leaks anywhere, whatsoever from anything!;)

The SDL engine must have an improved turbo-oil return line seal. That's the only oil leak I have, but strange that an engine with only 40k on it leaks at all. Keeps the underside of the car well lubricated;)

84 300SD 238K on original engine and transmission. All is well.

85drtysthbenz 11-20-2003 02:38 PM

85 300SD 174,000 miles....original engine and transmission...and frequent 105mph trips for about 2 hrs at a time,still just as strong as ever

got two small oil leaks, one from the turbo oil drain tube, which will be replaced next week....and i got some oil leaking from the filler cap,for some reason....other than that, there isnt one thing wrong with it

jerryyoung 11-20-2003 02:47 PM

1985 300TDT, 77,230 original miles, no leaks, runs like a stripped a## ape:D

Elapsed miles are an interesting factoid but, the significant thing IMHO is that in the 8 1/2 months since I bought Marlene (2/27/03) I've driven her a shade over 15,000 miles.

Jeeze! That's about 1750mi/mo and I only have an 16 mile round trip commute to work!!!

Whereintheheck did all the rest of those miles come from?

Four round trips to OKC (two in a 48hr period)
Five round trips to Dickinson
12+ round trips to San Antonio
One round trip to Corpus Christi

That alone is approximately 7500 miles and doesn't count the trips to Leathermang's grass farm to pick Brazosberries or squiring Januz Batko to Panna Maria, San Antonio and the Salt Lick.

But, the best part is I've loved every minute of it and not once has this 20 year-old car left me wondering if I was going to get where I was going.

They truly are "Engineered Like No Other Car in the World"

My gain is the PO only serviced the car at MB - I have full books and records - and amazing $$'s over the years. I did have MB do a 30K service this spring. Everything else has been maintained by myself (the forum) or my great Indy.

1982 300D turbodiesel with 297xxx miles and as far as I know it is the orginal engine and tranny but tranny hesitates going into reverse and I've heard that means it may give out soon but I'm still "driving it like I stole it" for about a 160 round trip every day for my daily employment commute and it hasn't left me standing since I cleaned the fuel filters and fuel tank screen.

1984 300SD turbodiesel with 293xxx miles and PO had engine rebuilt at 186xxx miles. We just acquired this one about a month ago but as far as we know everything else is orginal. No leaks either. Tranny shifts fine.

86560SEL 11-20-2003 04:50 PM

So this 1984 300SD that I am going to look at in a little while with 330K has more than likely had a rebuild? I hope so- it seems like a lot of folks here, with less miles has already had a rebuild, which makes me think that this one will soon need one as well. What is the highest mile 300SD than anyone has heard of, that has not had a rebuild?

rickg 11-20-2003 04:56 PM

I've heard of the non-turbo engines, like the old 220/240D engines of going half a million miles. These turbo 300's seem to be more around the 300k as an average. Of course depends alot on how well it was taken care of.
Maybe someone else has more insight on this.

BGill 11-20-2003 05:00 PM

81 300 SD 354000 miles (original engine 2nd transmission)
83 300 SD 270000 miles (original engine and transmission)
86 300 SDL 170000 miles (original engine and transmission)

jobah 11-20-2003 05:04 PM

My 84 300SD has an original engine/tranny at 177kmi, the 83 300D is also original at 240kmi.

84 190D (manufactured 20 years ago this month) has 373kmi with an original engine. A used 5 speed was put in at 343kmi as the input bearing on the old 5 speed went out.

the 84 190D runs the best of the group.

IMHO, any of the 616, 617, 617.9, 60x engines can run well into the 300kmi range and higher (my 190 runs no different at 373 kmi than it did at 273kmi). Each has its particularities, and weaknesses, but I think that the majority of it is in the care.

turbodiesel 11-20-2003 05:18 PM

When I sold my 300SDL at 321,000 the engine and transmission were original. Original head, too.

Daimler300CD 11-20-2003 05:22 PM

My 1985 300CD has 107,510 miles (Purchased 10/02 @ 93K)
My dads 1985 300D has about 148,000 miles (Purchased 2/00 @ 71K)
My brothers' 1987 190D 2.5 Turbo has about 164,000 miles (Purchased 7/00 @ 100K)
My other brothers' 1987 300D Turbo has about 230,000 miles (Purchased 6/99 @ 150K)

All are on their original engine and transmission.

Hey, JerryYoung- Do you have any photos of your 85 TDT? My dad had a Champagne 85 TDT and we sold in back in June of 2000. We owned it since about 50K miles and since 1987. We sold it with 209K. The guy we sold it to kept it for about 3 months and sold it on Ebay (one of those people who buys and sells to make profits.) We've recently came into contact with the current owner and may purchase it back sometime in the near future (if everything works out as planned). AFAIK, it has about 225K on it now. Not that bad of a mileage gap for over 3 years.

Oh yeah. We also had a 1984 190D 2.2 that my brother totalled in January 2000. I think it had 120K when we bought in 94 or 95. It was totalled with around 170K.

wagger 11-20-2003 05:22 PM

What bearing? I think the sunroof motor itself is weak which is causing the slow closing condition.

Plantman 11-20-2003 08:16 PM

1987SDl - just turned 324,000

Engine and tranny original. Engine and tranny perfect(will be tommorow anyway, after a bearing is replaced.

Has one more kink I need to fix before my cousin paints it, and that's find out why the sunroof moves so slow, and stops sometimes before closing with a littel help from me.

The only leak it had was from the power steeering box which was replaced.

peashooter 11-20-2003 10:20 PM

These things should go forever if my buddy's Chevy S-10 is any measure of longevity. He bought it in '96, drives 200 miles a day. Currently showing over 400k, good motor/trans. He's on the third electric fuel pump, ball joints gave up without warning about 100k ago. My Mercedes has only 140,000. The Saturn is over 150k, but sucks oil.

DslBnz 11-20-2003 10:26 PM

My father's '84 300D went 463K miles. He acquired it when it had 180K miles. Blew an oil ring. He drove the living -("...")- out of that car!

Non-turbo, or turbo. If its been serviced properly, 400K should be no problem. Even the gasoline M103 Mercedes can last this long!

The OM603 is every bit as tough as the 5-banger on the bottom-end. I saw one recently having a new rebuilt engine being put into it. Apparently some idiot put gasoline into the tank, and ruined it. Know how many miles on the original engine? 483K miles and it wouldn't have needed engine work had this not have happened!

Any other sitings?;)

ktlimq 11-20-2003 10:43 PM

1992 300D.
226 k miles.

Original tranny and engine.

I feel engine will last long, but I worry about the tranny.

I checked MPG in August and it was very good.

The claimed mpg:
MPG (highway) 31
MPG (city) 26

I got
MPG (highway + city) 32.

new member old car hope I posted it right. 323,000 82 240d odo broke have to get it fixed probally has more miles on it than shown.

edge 11-20-2003 11:16 PM

85 300SD has 125K miles, all original and is for sale, inquire within. 84 300D has 150K miles, both original and run great. 94 E320 has a rebuilt trans at 87K miles.

DslBnz 11-20-2003 11:41 PM

275K miles or so on my SDL,
254K miles or so on my SD,

The SDL is off by 15K miles, because it is the car that gets used the most. I don't want to have to keep updating my sig, so there you go.

SDL has original engine and head, and I believe had a new transmission sometime ago.

SD has (cough)(cough)(a-Hem) WELL IT IS A 350 WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? Anyway 170K miles on the updated engine.

You have to go to Daimler-Benz for the badge. You might be able to get an appilcation at your dealer, or send a letter requestion one to:
Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc.
One Mercedes Drive
Montvale, NJ 07645'
ATTN: High Mileage Awards Program

BTW, I've got 246 (about to turn over to 247) K miles on my car, and AFAIK everything's original and running strong! I got the car at 223K miles...

roy wood 11-21-2003 01:25 PM

1984 300 D 296,000 miles. original engine, transmission, timing
chain. runs great except for the usual water leaks and AC/heat
issues -- but without those i'd have no excuses for not doing yard work on the weekends!

should have second mileage badge by april '04.

also, be aware that the badges are for kilometers, not miles. So at 250k miles, you have 402,000 kilometers. You almost qualify for the 500k badge:)

No pictures yet, the wagon is Pale Ivory with Palomino interior. It has the roof rack W/two cross bars, no third seat. Runs and drives like new:D Has small scratch down the left side like someone rubbed a gate post leaving the back yard:( Needs that fixed and a good detailing as the interior is Palomino "pink" from sun damage. As with any car this age, small things need attention as it sat for a long time not used, I'm supprised it runs and drives as well as it does considering that.

I've GOT to learn to use my new digital camera and show ya'll some pictures:o

These cars continue to impress. The mechanic who services all 6 of my company vans, also helps me out with the SDL, when th ings get too sticky for me.

He routinely comments about how well engineered and well made these German cars are.

Even my friends, who were skeptical at first are starting to realize why I wanted an older, diesel Mercedes.

Have a wonderful weekend.

My '85 300D turbo has almost 220K miles, rebuilt trans at 108K. The alternator, water pump, a/c compressor where replaced over time. Still has original vacuum pump, IP and starter as well as timing chain. Clear coat almost gone from hood. Seat springs busted, upholstery good. Almost all trim has had to be re-attached inside and out. Most weather stripping dried out and cracked. New windshield rubber. Most all switches, relays and actuators replaced. The engine makes a clicking sound that I still don't know where its coming from. I've checked everything that can be checked short of replacing the suspect components (too many and to much $$$ to do it). It runs good enough so I don't care anymore.

Veloce300DT 11-22-2003 03:28 PM

Mine is 200 miles short of 158K miles.

79 300Sd with 367K miles. Tranny grumbles when cold, slips on hills, window regulators went years ago --but the engine shows no sign of slowing down, and continues to purr without complaint or using up oil. Of course, oil changes every 3-5k miles helped.
