Slave cylinder replacement

Yesterday, I removed the slave cylinder from my Euro 300D. When I pulled the cylinder free from the engine, along with it came a spacer. Haynes tells me that the thick parts of the spacer must go against the engine, just like it was when I removed it. Alas, Haynes didn't tell me how fragile the spacer was, so, while cleaning it, I broke it. The break was clean, though, so I should be able to glue it lightly to the new cylinder prior to reinstallation. What I would like to know is, what is the function of this spacer and why is it designed the way it is? Am I risking catastrophe if I glue the two parts of it to the cylinder, as I plan to do?

Since the cylinder which was sent to me by one of our favorite parts suppliers, I may get a new spacer when I get the correct cylinder.

Re: Slave cylinder replacement

I recently did the same job. The spacer does not come with the slave cylinder. However, once you glue back together and bolt the cylinder into place it shouldn't come out.

Just replaced mine too. My spacer broke in half and I glued it to the slave cylinder.

The spacer's function is to provide a slot that one can slide a clutch wear guage into. While it was all apart I made a two-pronged fork that fit the hole in the spacer with a slot that fits around the slave cylinder shaft at its skinniest point. As I understand it, one can insert this tool in the hole and check clutch wear. If the guege goes in all the way, the clutch is OK- if not and it contacts the fat part of the shaft, your clutch is done for.
