oil pan gasket

i'm about to replace the oil pan gasket on my 240d.

is it a fairly straightforward task or is there something i should know before i tackle it. it's supposed to be warm this weekend. might as well enjoy it by changing the gasket.

any tips out there?

Rodsob,

If you mean the gasket between the upper aluminum pan and the lower steel pan, its a piece of cake.

Just R&R 18 socket head screws. You will need an 6mm (I think) allen wrench. Job will be easier if you have a socket wrench with an allen wrench in it and a 1/4 inch ratchet and 6 inch extension. Some of the screws might be different lengths so put them back where they came from.

Don't forget to drain the oil first.

you my want to get the rubber extension thing that goes on the bottom of the oil pump, these can get brittle. should be flexable, i replaced mine to avoid small pieces comming off and clogging the oil pump.........hopefully someone here knows the name for this part...

oil pan

There is one extra long bolt that holds a hard line that runs along the oil pan I believe on the driver's side. There is a little plastic insert that goes along the hard line so it does not rub and damage the line. Expect that plastic piece probably will be toast and will need to be replaced unless it has not been disturbed too much. If in a pinch you could cut / fab something up out of spare hose.

I think it is only 15nm torque on the 15+? screws - no need to gorilla, 40nm on the oil drain plug. If the screws look toast, Lowes actually had a nice selection of them (6mm thread I believe).

Use the top sider method for oil removal from here on out and you never have to touch that drain plug (and mar it) again!

I need to replace the oil pan gasket also. 83' 300cd. Would it be recommended to use a gasket sealant or just replace the gasket only?

Marks88,

Gasket only, no sealer needed.

Thanks for the info. I have replace this gasket twice and it is still leaking. Maybe the pan is warped. I thought a sealer might help.

Marks88.

Try placing the pan on a flat surface, maybe a piece of glass, and see if it is warped. If it is you can try to straighten it or replace it.
