injectors spewing fuel from return line nipples

I replaced the return hoses in the SDL on Sunday after the car had sat since Wednesday afternoon. The car was parked facing down the driveway slope. It's not a radical slope. What I noticed that I didn't notice when I replaced the hoses in the 83 SD is that when I removed the old hose the injectors would spew fuel for a long time. I had time to leisurely cut a new section of hose and fit both ends back on the injector nipples with no reduction in the rate fuel was spewing. In fact there was a 5mm or so tall fountain from some injectors. I could stand the ~6" hose straight up and there was enough of a head to push fuel to the high end of the hose. Is this normal?

FWIW, I replaced the return hoses in the SDL a year/4000 miles ago when I replaced the head. The injectors were dry so this wasn't an issue. Only one of the #4 return nipples showed signs of leaking.

Thanks,
Sixto

It all depends on how full the fuel tank is at the time. The 126 tank sits behind the rear seat and if the tank is much more than ~1/2 full, the fuel level is higher than the injector level and fuel will run from the tank back along the open fuel return path and out the return lines.

when i replaced my return hoses the tank level was lower than the engine by only a very small amount and there was no ''fountain'' caused when removing the lines.
thanks for the warning!!

Makes sense because fuel was spewing from the forward injector only.

Thanks,

There, ya happy?

I type my sig lines because I change cars mroe frequently than the average forumite and I prefer for the archives to have a list of what I had when I sumitted the post rather than what I have years later.
