Chain timing specs for 616 - Dial indicator procedures
Just set up my dial indicator as pictured. Had to extend my indicator with a short rod to reach cleanly beside the cam. This is a standard dial reading in.001” so doing the conversion I believe 2mm of valve lift is .07874.
Followed the procedure as per tcane in an earlier thread: "You check timing chain stretch using the following procedure (for a non-turbo 300D, you'll need to get the specs for you turbo): 1. remove valve cover 2. adjust #1 intake valve to 0/zero clearance 3. mount a dial gauge so it contacts the valve spring cap at a perpendicular angle (or as close as you can with a preload of greater than 2mm, 3-4mm is best) 4. turn engine to TDC #1 cylinder 5. carefully continue to turn engine until #1 intake valve opens 2mm 6. read the degree marks on the harmonic balancer On the non-turbo 300D a new timing chain will show 11.5 degrees ATDC (after top dead center)" The results are pictured below (looks like 11.5 to me) which seems too good, so I am questioning the specs. My 123 CD manual lists only specs for the 617.950, 951, 952 and they depend on the cam number. In my case this 1982 240d has an engine number of 616 912 and a cam number 10. Does anyone have the timing specs for this engine? It just doesn’t seem reasonable that there would be no stretch in 200,000 miles.

jcwells,
What does the crank read if you carefully line up the cam timing marks by turning th engine in a clockwise rotation facing the engine? P E H |

Ok when I line up the cam marks the crank reads 2 to 2.5 ATD.
I notice that one of the specs listed for cam code 05 with a new chain is 9 degrees at 2 mm. If this spec were to apply to this engine then the 2 reading methods would be in agreement and I have 2.5 degrees of stretch. However, before I go buying the 2 degree offset woodruff key I would like to be sure. Thanks for the assistance. John |

Here is one of the best threads I have seen on this subject in general...
Timing everything! Cam timing that is... |

JC,
With only 2 degrees of stretch, I wouldn't bother with the offset woodruff key. That's well with in spec. P E H |

Well that's great. I guess all those synthetic oil changes do make a difference.
Thanks for the comments. John |
