I'm not sure what it is but back in the spring someone posted a picture of a worn out differential that clunked badly as I recall. A search for that post might show the diagnostic procedure for a a worn differential.

Dieselman,

It could be worn gears in the differential. If you can rock the drive shaft back and forth by hand (In neutral), that's probably what it is.

Are the flex joints tight with no fabric showing?

clunk clank clunk!!!!!!Please Help

Another new mercedes-300TD. I have a little problem. On acceleration the trans seems to jerk into gear. I also noticed a noise if I pumped the pedal while sitting in the car from the rear end. Sort of a clanking noise. I had someone pump the pedal while I looked at the rear with a flash light. It is at the end of the drive shaft. It seems to be twisting a little while pumping the pedal and clanks. Basically it looks loose or like it is moving when it should not while in park. What does this mean?

Thanks,
Dieselman

Okay I hope it is the flex disc and not the differential. I appreciate the help!!! It was for awhile doing this clunking thing when I would come to a stop so I adjusted the modulator on the trans and it stopped that. So I was happy then I turned the ALDA a few times, it had never been touched Talk about POWER!!!! It starts at 25 degrees no problem. So the only thing that is worrying me now is this dang jerking. I had thought flex disc and will check them tonight. I did reach under the car before I posted and tried to turn the drive shaft or wiggle it. It moved back and forth very little. I just love these cars.... I may have had more of them than anyone Heck I have five now. I will list the ones I have had.

Thanks,
Dieselman
