Cruise control "noise" ??

Ok, I was working on the car late last night and I found a new noise that was NOT there before.

When I put the key in the 'on' position, I hear, what I THINK, is the cruise control unit making an odd noise (like there is a small electric motor in it that is running or something????)

Anyway... it is the black box that is connected to the throttle linkage that says "VDO" on it...

Any idea on what this noise is...?

Thanks,
Pete

My cruise made a quiet "EEEEEEEEEEEE" noise when engaged and climbing hills until it started the dreaded surging and I haven't used it since. MB CC's are a product of their time, expensive to repair and flaky. I am planning of retrofitting a quality aftermarket CC system to my 300D when I find the time.... RT

I wouldn't care if mine made noise as long as it worked good. I also have the dreaded surge problem with mine so I wont use it either. It sucks not being able to use the CC with it surges like it does. Starting next month I'm going to have to drive 100 miles round trip twice a week for three months and its going to be a big PIA not having a good working CC for those trips. Maybe I'll just drive my wife's Tahoe instead.

Lietuviai.

Which bulbs do you have in the taillights?
US wattage or Euro wattage.
It makes a big difference.
You need Euro wattage bulbs.
Dealer item.

Hmmm... I recently replaced 2 of my REVERSE lights with non-dealer bulbs... could that have anything to do with my new noise?

Honestly I have no idea. Does this US/Euro wattage issue make any difference with any of the other bulbs?

GottaDiesel.

No, if I remember correctly it is just
the brake light bulbs that would
influence the cruise control,but
I could be wrong.

I remember reading somewhere else in the forum about how the wrong bulbs can affect the CC. How can you tell if you have the right bulbs, are they a special Bosch type?

The wattage of he US bulbs is higher.

Correct bulbs according my owners manual(w123)

Turn: 21W/32 cp
Brake: 21W/32 cp
Tail,park:10W/6cp

I got mine from the dealer this way
I have the correct ones,no need to guess.

US ones are 1157 or 1156 don't know
wattage though.

Louis,
Thanks for checking. I'll see what bulbs I've got once it stops raining long enough.

I checked my bulbs out today and they look like the right ones since they were all made in Germany. I guess my cruise control surge problem is related to something else. I was hoping that it was something so simple as the wrong bulbs. Not with my luck I guess.
