92 300D 2.5 turbo belt tensioner spring or?
I have heard a small rattle (like a cat purring). I have used a hose to find out the location of the noise. It is not a metal screeching sounding noise.
The noise came from the belt tensioner or spring. At idle it is not there. When I hit the accelerator I quickly hear it and then it goes away. I am planning to replace the drive belt tensioner and the spring. Is there a test or a rec. to replace any item once I am there? I have saved a lot of money and TIME with all of your help. Thank you Nick Mendoza |

The belt tensioner shock can also cause that noise. MB number 604-200-02-14

This is a common issue on OM60X engines. If you raise the hood and watch the tensioner shock and spring while you increase the engine speed you will be able to see the shock vibrate and emit the noise you describe. On my car the noise appears at about 800rpm and disappears by 1000-1100 RPM - a new shock solved the problem everytime.
I seem to have to change my tensioner shock every 70-90K miles - I've never replaced the spring. Tim |

quite often it is the bushing in the shock that either wears out or in one case was split and tossed out so the eye of the shock was just rattling about on the bolt. You will have to remove the fan for the lower bolt
Take care to use the hex head socket perpendicular to the fan clutch otherwise it will strip out and necessitate removing the radiator, condenser and then drilling it out. |
