muffler replaced with straight pipe
My rear muffler fell of last week and the local shop had trouble finding a source for the rear muffler assembly. They replaced it with a straight piece of exhaust pipe. It sure was cheaper !! The car is not any louder than it was before with the big old muffler hanging down there. Anybody see a problem with this. The mechanic said the car would probably be happier with out the additional restriction. The car still has the smaller muffler that sits about midstream of the exhaust system. All seems OK so far

I think you should go by your ear.
If the car really isn't any louder, or at least doesnt bother you or other drivers, I see no need to add a rear muffler. And your mechanic is right -- less exhaust restriction is almost always a good thing. I say leave it. |

No problem that I can think of. Diesels want as little exhaust restriction as possible, and while the pipe diameter's already big enough that I'm not sure how much removing the mufflers will help with power, you certainly won't experience a problem by doing so.

I run straight pipe full-time with only the flex turndown tube after the turbo. Yes, it's loud compared to normal.
Since I have to leave around 6:30am for my work now, I have put everything back on before the locals around here start ot "complain." They tend to voice their opinions by stealing my tire valve caps, adjusting my mirrors, and turning my star (Now that's going too far!). I have noticed quite alot more turbo lag and overall stuffieness around town. |

Dont diesels need some back pressure to work efficiently?
