Oil and Sludge in intake and Air filter
I seem to have a large amount of sludge in the intake manifold and some oil in the air cleaner any suggestions?
Thanks, Kenn |

I have seen that happen on 1953 Studebaker coupes.... is that the model car you own ?

No, it would be a 1980 300D MB, close on speed but not performance.

Does your car have a line from the vacuum pump to the top center of the air cleaner... and have oil on the INside of the air cleaner then you have probably ruptured your diaphram on the vacuum pump..

I do have a hose from my Vacuum pump to the air cleaner, would this account for my sludge in my intake also? Would this hold true even if I have good vacuum 18"? thanks for the input.

the sludge in the intake is possibly from a connected or leaking
egr valve. oil is from excessive blowby from the valve cover, a leaking vacuum pump, or a leaking turbo. if it is a vacuum pump problem it needs to be taken care of pronto |

The EGR was closed off some time ago, the blowby concerned me however I found the valves to be tight as a drum so I do not think they are seating well making extra presure in the the valve cover. The timing chain does read out 0 at TDC. I hope a valve adjustment will do the trick. Sound reasonable? If I have good Vacuum and can feel the presure of the out hose going to the of the Air cleaner should I be concerned with the Vacuum pump at all. I get around 18" at idel.

Never mind the amount of vacuum. The hose from the vacuum pump to the air filter housing should be transparent. If it is black, then that would indicate a ruptured diaphram.
But since you asked, 18 doesn't sound all that great. My 240D makes well over 20" at idle.
