Take off the supply line and give it a few strong blows of air, that will blow the gunk off the screen and give you some extra time.

Save some money and buy a bolt with a 22MM head and 2 nuts. Jamb the nuts on the bolt and use it to remove the filter screen. This way you can use a 22MM wrench, socket, etc. on the nuts while the bolt head is in the screen recess.

Here the Mercedes specialty tool that I made. I can make one for you for only $99.95 Plus shipping and handleing. Your total bill will be

$99.95 One fuel screen remover
+ $29.95 Shipping and a lot of handling
_________
$129.90

This is a custom made precision tool. Don't think about going to a hardware store and buying a bolt and 2 nuts.

DMorrison,

guess you have to have actually removed a screen before to have a clue what your trying to tell us to ram up our...... :p

For me I ordered the set of sockets cause I need some big hawkin metric sockets for my Unimog anyway. Still have no clue though on what your describing above. Little more info?

Gentlemen I stand corrected.
coachgeo was confused by my levity or lack of. The 300TD wagon does not have the fuel hose screwed into the screen so a 22MM bolt will work. I checked the Service Manual on the 123 sedan. Sorry for the confusion
coachgeo I was not asking you to ram it anywhere. Sorry your so sensitive to my attempt at humor. Those with the 123 wagon can use my idea.
You will enjoy the Harbor Freight socket set. I know, I have it. It's is a nice set.

harbor freight = disposable tools!

i ordered a bunch of stuff from harbor frieght and thought the prices were too good to be true. i broke two of the impact sockets within the first week.

than i kept stripping bolts with the hand wrenches. i measured the open end of a 10MM with a micrometer, and it was 10.5MM or something.

i guess for large stuff that is infrequently used they are OK, but if you plan on really "using" your tools, but the expensive stuff that lasts (snap on or craftsman)

just a word to the wise....

What a difference!!! I used brake cleaner. Dunkelblau has better pickup now!!! After installing this i went to re-fuel and treat with Biobor. Ill probably have to do this again in a little while when the dead algae clogs it up.

By the time I needed the 46mm or a 1-13/16" socket, Sears was closed. Sears carries a 1-13/16" socket for $20 (listed on their web site). One of the local Snap-On guys has a special tool for removing the fuel filter, I saw it and it looks like a rather flat socket. Its not chromed. He sells them to the local dealer. $40. Fits very very well.

So now I'm stuck with algae in the system and no tool. Thats what car rental companies are for I guess.
