Did the glow plug conversion
Converted the 77 300td from loop type plugs to pencil type plugs today. Bought the kit on ebay but on Stevo's advice, just put the plugs in and didn't bother wiring in the new timer and relay. Took about half an hour. Pull out the old plugs, disconnect the ground and put in the new plugs. They are wired using the same hot wire from the big strip fuse box and then short jumper wires from one plug to another, with the final ground wire left off.
I would say that apart from the better starting and the fact that one glow plug failure will not cause all the downstream plugs to stop working, one simple reason makes the new pencil type better. You can put the wires and the nuts to hold them on, onto the glow plug before you screw it into the head. You don't have to reach down into the small space and try to get a tiny nut on the end of the glow plug the way you have to with the series plugs. The new plugs have pencil ends but the large threads like the old loop type. The Bosch number is 0 250 201 044 then at the end in smaller type is -35T. I believe the new plugs are more expensive than the old but well worth it. You can buy the kit which usually includes 4 plugs, and then an additional plug. The kit includes the relay, timers and small jumper wires along with thumbscrew nuts for the ends of the plugs. On a 300d the kit also calls for an additional relay which must also be wired in. As I wrote, I did not bother with the new timer. I think all it means is that the glow plug light from the old loop style plugs will glow longer than is necessary to start the engine. It would be just as easy to buy the plugs and then make the small jumper wires yourself. You would not get the large thumscrew nuts for the ends of the plugs, but the nuts off the old plugs will fit.

Good show, ya, those new style plugs really make a big difference. I have a push button left side, under the dash rigged up with a solenoid on my "78", no relay to crap out, which is how I will set up the next car that shows any sign of relay problems. Steve |
