1979 300SD for sale in Tulsa

Doing my normal weekend cruise down Admiral and 11th street looking to spot MB Diesels, I was lucky to spot this SD.

Here is the low and nasty on this beast:
Lot owner bought for $1100 from a local seller.
Lot mechanic knows NOTHING about diesel engines.
Engine has a miss at idle.
#1 cylinder has a metalic rattle (sounds like an internal is loose.)
Oil leak at valve cover gasket.
Engine bay is filthy, like it has not been cleaned in 5+ years.
Transmission shifts very nice, quick shifts into R and D.
Body has no surface rust above bottom of the doors, but DOES have lower body rust and minor frame rust near the bumper.
Only the driver window goes down, but not up.
Other than the window, the inside gets no electric power.
No turn signals, headlights, or tail lights get power.
AC compressor clutch did not engage, may be related to other electrical problems.
Battery started the engine on the first try.
Speedometer and oil gauge work. fuel, tach, temp do not.
Steering wheel is mounted upsidedown.

Driving:
Straight and tight steering.
No vibration other than engine.
Good low end engine power, high end needs more boost.

Seller asked $1100, but after driving it, I said I might offer $900 at most. Before I went on my way, he said he was willing to let it go for $800 since he could sell 5 cars in the time it would take to fix up this one.

Sorry for the long post. Anyone wanting a good W116 body, willing to fix the body electrical gremlins, and willing to repair, transplant or rebuild the engine, this is a good one. No picture, I left the digi cam at home.

Weather has warmed up here and the 116 cars are coming out.

I have seen a red SD, a 450se, and a mint, dark blue 280S- carburatted.

I was out in California a month or so ago and must have seen about 20. a great looking brown (the lighter, metallic shade) 450sel was blasting down 280 near menlo park.

So they are out there, and I think there are many oldtimers who have nice example tucked away in their garages.

Bought myself a second '79 300SD. Much Much better shape than my white W116.

Anybody here ever driven a 6.9? I'm going to have to get one of those.... nice little garage queen and autocross vehicle.

My friend just bought a 1979 300SD. Original owner, totally restored from ground up. The most AMAZING 300SD I have ever seen. New high quality paint job in the original milan brown metalli- same as the w116 in Ronin. Bamboo interior completely refurbished aswell. Chrome 6.5/14 in bundts.

212K miles.

AMAZING

I'll have to get him to join mercedesshop so he can join all of you w116 SD owners.

I live in CA, and of all w116 bodied cars I see, most are SD's.
And I see alot, at least 2 per day in the city. Theyre everywhere!

If the w123 werent slightly sportier in driving characteristics, id love to have a 116 SD.

116 crew I need Help

Since this thread will catch the interest of the 116 crew, I am responding here. Please see the link attached and chime in if you think you can provide any help at all. The link will have another link attached which was my first post. I love my 1979 300SD but if I can not resolve this a/c problem I am thinking about moving on. I live in Manhattan and commute back and forth to Brooklyn every day. The summer here can get brutal. Now add in the fact that I sit in bumper to bumper traffic on the FDR everyday with cars blowing carbon monoxide. Now picture yourself on a 90 degree day with the windows open with 90% humidity and no a/c. I have about three to four weeks to resolve this a/c issue or for sale she goes. I have tried to figure this fuse blowing issue out and been through 2 blower motors (only paid for one). I have had anybody and everybody I know look at this issue . I just can not figure it out. Does anybody think that maybe I have a push button control that needs to be resoldered? Maybe there is some relay or voltage regulator that has gone bad? Right now as of May 13th I can get the system to work on the low setting only. Fuse will last about 4 or 5 cycles before she blows. Horn came back and is now working normally and at full volume. This I can not explain. Any and all thoughts are welcome and appreciated. Us 116 boys need as much representation on this board as possible. Show those 123 and 126 boys who dominate this board that we are here as well!!!

Please I need 116 Help!!!

I don't know about your fuse problem. I'll try to ask my indie next time I see or talk to him. Would something have a short maybe? You could always pull the climate control push-button, resolder it, then see if that fixes it. There's also the amp behind the glovebox that I heard needs to be resoldered sometimes. The amp is easy to get to, I've never done it, but that's what I've heard.
Thanks
David

I just wanted to let all the W116 fans know that I am in the process of setting up a web site dedicated to the W116 at http://www.w116.org.

There is a forum for everything W116 and a photo gallery to which you can upload your photos. I will be adding more material very soon and contributions are welcome.

Hope to see you all there!

Thanks,
Mike.

Very nice web site!

I think you should talk it up some more to get the word out.

I just inherited my dad's 1980 300sd. Ivory exterior and tex interior. Should turn 130k over the weekend. Just purchased a Mity vac today. Learning about the importance of a vacuum. This is a great forum!
