Shocks - Rebound?

When driving my 300SD and I come across road conditions that compresses the shock it feels fine. When I come across a road condition the causes the wheel to drop fairly quickly and the shock to extend (like coming over a quick crest) I hear a thump which I assume is the shock fully extending.

Maybe extending to quick and little rebound?

I don't see leaks and don't know how many miles are on the current shocks and have no idea how to check gas charged shocks to see if they are up to snuff. It feels smooth otherwise.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Don
