I bought a 300 turbodiesel! need advice

guys,

you guys are a bad influence! i just bought another car. if you guys remember, i bought a 300d a while back.

anyway, i got an offer from a forum member and since i the cigarette smell was pretty bad, i sold it.

as luck would have it, i had an opportunity to buy another one today. it is a black 300 turbodiesel. no bodywork. original paint. no rust. 220k miles.

the guy selling it had no emotional attachment to the car. he wanted $500 but took $400.

the only problem is that there is a loud "clanking" sound in the engine. i'm getting it towed on sunday. it sounds like it is coming from the bottom part of the engine.

with the help of this forum, i have the confidence to tackle this project.

i know that the loud 'clanking sound' could be anything but do you guys have any guesses as to what it might be? help me out!

the worst case scenario is it is something terminal so i have to dump the car for parts.

jennifer

Ok, 300D then.

Clanking can be anything from a bad injector (nailing) to a spun bearing. You'll need somebody who knows diesels well enough to listen to it in person. But if you're absolutely sure it is coming from the bottom end, then that more than likely means a rebuild or replacement engine.

(edit) Someone who knows Diesels and whom you can trust!

Hey, why do you think you got it so cheap? Is the rest of the car nice? If so, then it is probably worth a transplant. Contact engatwork and see if he wants to take on another project.

Deep hollow clang clang clang at engine speed is a spun bearing, probably #2. If allowed to go, the crank will soon score and break.

New engine time. New engine time anyway, as the bearing cap and block area are chewed up.

If loosening the injector cap nuts one at a time (then retightening) makes the sound go away on the affected cylinder, it's an injector.

The nuts that hold down the steel lines from injection pump to injectors. You'll need a 17mm open end wrench.

IIRC from my gasser days, a bad rod bearing will rattle when you let off the throttle (say 3000 rpm), but a bad main bearing will clunk/pound upon throttle up. I've heard that on diesels these phenomena are almost undetectable, and simply let go unannounced.

My money says it's a bad injector, delivery valve, or IP.

I wish I could find $400 MB diesels up here.

you can find them for less if you are patient (of course mine doesn't run, and I can't get the damn hood open to owrk on it). That is the ultimate security system. You can't steal this one unless you have a flatbed or wrecker!
